Blazer top texture
Does anyone know what that stuff is?
The wife wants a smooth top on her Blazer and even though I have built dozens of Blazers over the years I have never attempted a smooth top before. Has anyone smoothed their top? how did you do it? Sand it down? use fiberglass stripper? I could use any hints at all!! |

Re: Blazer top texture
It's the way the fiberglass is molded. If you want a smooth top the best way is to block it all down, either with an air board or good ole' fassion man power

Re: Blazer top texture
I've been asking about how to get the texture finish and nobody seems to know. I was gonna use bed liner but everybody advises against it. I wanted white. I contacted the bedliner mfg (Herculiner) and they agreed - - "it will not stay white - it will grey or yellow". So - - I have been sanding - filling - sanding - filling - sanding. I'm about ready to shoot it - smooth.

Re: Blazer top texture
I used Al's Liner, tinted white, it is garage kept but still looks good. You have to use a high grade tint $$100 a quart

Re: Blazer top texture
I'm going with Durabak bed liner. Supposed to be real tough, easy to apply, comes in a bunch of different colors, and works on fiberglass. Also comes in either a smooth or rough texture. I've never used it though, I couldn't tell you how good it is.

Re: Blazer top texture
I smoothed mine with a flat sanding airboard and fill in primer and it is very slick just remember even with a board fiberglass will always be wavy

Re: Blazer top texture
I repaired mine and attempted to mimic the texture with no success. Went to a local body shop and they did a wonderful job with the finish. $100.00 well spent!

Re: Blazer top texture
That is the process that I am leaning towards doing. I do know it will still be wavy and have explained that to the wife and she still wants smooth..

Re: Blazer top texture
Doesn't have to be wavy, just takes alot of block sanding and filler, your arms will be tired

Using one of these will help getting out the waveshttp://www.autobodytoolmart.com/dura-block-2-58-x-30-marine-sanding-block-af4410-p-16007.aspx

Re: Blazer top texture
I sanded mine with 80 grit on a d/a sander; stripped the factory coating right off, primed then painted. I'm not concerned about it being wavy, and it doesn't really show much if you go white.

Re: Blazer top texture
I think the factory sags are something we as Blazer owners might have to live with, haven't seen any cures for them. Out of site out of mind

Re: Blazer top texture
From what I gather, I believe that issue is a double wall top problem. The single walls don't have the sag or wave issue.

Re: Blazer top texture
Interesting. Mine is flat as a pancake. I would think here in the AZ sun would be the worst for it?
I've heard others here say the double walls were the worst, and singles weren't a problem. Something about the design change with more support. |

Re: Blazer top texture
I also have a question concerning these tops. According to my SPID, my top was originally black, a PO painted it white at some poit. I want to go back orginal. Did the black tops have a flat or gloss finish from the factory? Was the underside black as well? I see many photos of black tops with white undersides.

Re: Blazer top texture
mine is factory black....it is faded pretty badly so i don't know if it was satin or gloss or what. the inside is white though. i know the PO didn't repaint it.

Re: Blazer top texture
The wifes single wall is also black with a white inside, it too is so faded I am not sure if it was originally gloss or flat.
