Question Steering Column Question

My truck has a Automatic Column Shift, Tilt Steering Column, (whew that was a mouth full!!). But my shifter is now on the high hump floor. Does anybody have any ideas about getting rid of the hole left by the column shift handle? Is there a way of replacing the outer housing with a manual shift, tilt cover? Or what did you guys do?

Thanks

I've seen one with the collar from a non tilt automatic, I don't know what was done to get it there, but I know it can be done.

I will trade you for a non tilt standard column to help you out, those tilts are nothing but trouble anyways, I will dispose of it for you :p

Collar from Non-Tilt

Does anybody know if the collar from a non-tilt will fit a tilt steering column?

With the demand for tilt columns what it is, why not get a floor shift column and sell the tilt for a few hundred?

That is a very rare route to go. I think some one on here had one and got like 3 hundred out of it or something.

No. The easy solution is just not to worry about it, which is what I did for years with my '67.

72longbed,
I've got the same problem. I checked into it a few months back with a similar question, but it seemed that no one on the board had done one at the time. I have been meaning to try and replace the column shift cover with one from a non-tilt manual but just haven't gotten around to it yet. It looks like it will fit, but until I try it I won't know for sure.

Josh,
Please keep me posted on your progress towards finding the answer. I would think with all the oldtimers/veterans of this era truck, we would have received more useful feedback on the subject. I'm sure its not the first time someone has raised the question.

I was told recently that we have a member who regularly rebuilds these columns, both tilt and standard, and that he would know the answer for sure. I need to find out who that is and get in touch with him.

I'll let you know what I find.

72longbed,
Hopefully we can come up with an answer. I imagine there are others like us who are in the same situation. I'll keep you posted if I find or hear of a solution that works.
