65 Panel RE ratio??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Understanding that RE ratio's could be optional in the 60's, But what could I expect to find in a 65 C10 panel w 6cyl/4spd granny low truck for a RE ratio? My thought is that I want to raise the ratio when I go to a 5 bolt hub RE. From my memory those old granny 4 speed trucks were geared pretty low .

to my understanding if it is a factory inline 6 and a 4spd good chances are that you prob have 4.10 gears even in a half ton

I agree that there is a good possibility that your rear end will have 4.10 gears. However, I have found 3.73 gears to be the most common in my dealings with these trucks over the past 35+ years.

Also, the SM420 4 speed truck trans has a 1:1 4th gear just as any other 4 speed trans. In normal everyday driving, 1st gear is not used.....you start out in 2nd gear.

I thought it would be in that area. I've always started off in second w those 4 speeds . My idea is to run a RE w a ratio in the 3.00 to 3.50 range. I think that would make the truck ultimately a much better driver w a compromise of Perf. and milage. I thought about a 2:9?'s RE but I am not sure how that granny low would handle that. But then I do not plan to actually HAUL anything except AS- w a fairly stout SBC and moving my pontoon around the bend to the landing twice a year. (in + out of the water, spring and fall), BUT that said a 3:73 RE would be a nice set for a 700R4 trans. HMMM options options ;D thanks
