Disc Brake Conversion for my 67' C10 LWB
Hello,
I have a 67' Chevy C10 LWB Truck with 6-Lug Drum front brakes. A neighbor of mine has a Complete Disk Brake Front end out of a 1972 Chevy C10 Pickup He say's it is a 5 on 5 lug pattern. The question i have is will that fit on My truck, And what is the 5 on 5 lug Pattern? Is that a 6 lug? I have not yet seen the condition of these and my neighbor has them tucked away and has not looked at them in a while. He is asking $200.00 |

5 on 5 is not 6 lug - it means 5 lug nuts on a 5" bolt circle. You would need 5 lug wheels with this setup.
Edit: just to clarify - half ton trucks were 6 lug thru late 60's - early 70's were 5 lug (only 1/2 tons that were 6 lug in early 70's were 4x4's) I don't recall the exact year of the changeover, but you fall into the same category as 60-66 half ton trucks with your 1/2 ton 6 lug life. They call them 12",... but I think they are actually 11-7/8".

You should check out lolife99's Drum to Disc brake conversion thread. It answered all of my questions for me. I purchased a 71-72 complete disc brake set-up crossmember and all from teeitup, Randy, who was great to do business with btw , and its going on my '69 C10. Crossmember should bolt right up to the frame, getting it blasted first so havent mounted it yet.

Thanks to all that replied.
That was a good write up by lolife99, thanks for pointing that out gcburdic I think that will work then. $200.00 does not sound too bad I will probably have to rebuild & paint. I am not sure if it has the steering gearbox with it, & if it does, is it a power or manual i know that it was sitting out side for 5 years so I am not expecting to much, he says that he swapped to a 4 wheel drive front end, that is why he is selling it. I will need to buy a new Brake master Disc/drum style, SS. brake lines & some adapters. |

I'm just spit-ballin' here, but by the time you spend $200 on the used stub, then buy the Disk/Drum mc (what about a booster?), brake lines, adapters, etc that you mention you'll need in the post above - (and wheels?) - well, won't you be close to buying a brand new 6 lug disk conversion kit? Probably not THAT much, but something to consider since you're not getting all the freebie parts along with the stub like master cylinder, etc and will need new wheels (unless you already have some 5 lugs layin around). And if it's been laying around outside for 5 years, I'd imagine the disks are pretty much rust piles by now - so throw those in too while you're at it. Maybe the calipers won't be frozen. I don't want to poop in the punch bowl, but seems if you're basing your choice on opportunity of a local stub and saving some $, there are a few other considerations that haven't been discussed. Just a thought, I could be way off base, but these are questions I'd be asking myself, so thought I'd share. Either way you decide to go, it will be a very worthwhile upgrade. |

I agree^^^.
There is nothing in that 72 crossmember assembly, that you don't already have on your truck. (except the disc brake spindles) If your adding drop spindles,... then there is NOTHING that you need. The rotors, calipers, bearings,... should all be replaced with new. The 71-72 steering linkage is a plus,... but not neccessary any more with the new conversion spindles for 63-70 trucks. ($228/pair) Just a thought. The only advantage to spending $200 on the extra parts,... it would allow you to rebuild them in your spare time. Then swap all the parts later. I'm not sure it's worth $200. I think most of it will be replaced with new parts anyway.

Yea you guys are probably right.
After all I do want this truck to stop very well and not have problems. When I put the new disc's I was looking at the CPP setup #6770cbk5 Looks like it is a complete setup and includes booster, mstr cly. $599.00 I will be doing a engine and trans swap, right after i do a front end rebuild and Rear bushing suspension. I have a Rebuilt 350ci .030 over, 9.1:1 coated pistons with Vortec heads, and a comp cam with a performer eps intake and a 600cfm carb. roller rockers. waiting to be shoehorned in to my truck. Comp Cam's dyno says 348h.p. & 415 ftlbs torque with this setup, I do want to make sure i can stop. The Trans/converter is a built 700r4 from phoenix. It currently has a I6 250ci and a 3 speed manual trans I would like to lower it a little I want the fender to tire spacing to be equal all the way around the tire. I dont know how much lowering that will take maybe 3" inches? Correct me if i am wrong but you cannot use 15" rims with the disc's, 16" rims or larger? or you contact the rotor. If you want to lower it,... use drop spindles.
They will work fine with 15" wheels. Keep the wheel backspacing at 4" or less and you will be fine.

$200 seems pretty high for something that came on every 2wd 1/2 ton truck starting in 71. I have actually thrown them away over the years.

Check GMC pauls as well I have used their kit twice and it is really complete and uses good parts.

Ok,... what is the plan?
Using the '72 parts or not? Spindles can be ordered for 63-70 trucks. 71-72 spindles are different. Steering stuff is different. There are many good drop spindle companies. McGaughys Belltech Western Chassis Performance Online. Summit Racing is a good source for affordable drop spindles. What is the big picture plan? Rebuilding everything? Balljoints, tie rods, control arm bushings? The year of spindle you choose,... will decide which parts you buy. The rearend can be swapped out for a 71-72 5 lug rearend,... or you can buy conversion axles.

well I am new to these Older trucks, But Not to working on cars.
My plan was to drop in a new engine & Trans, but more power always means upgrading other systems. I had not thought that far ahead. But Now that i am at that point, please provide some info/suggestions. I will be adding Power brakes. I will be adding a front & rear swaybar to get the truck to handle a little better. Are there any benefits going to the 71-72 vs sticking with a 67-70 I would like the truck to hold the road better, by swapping the front & rear worn parts. I wanted to rebuild the front end and replace the susp rear bushings. I saw some poly bushings I would expect them to be better, but is the ride much harsher and more noise? westgl

I suggest ECE.
(www.EarlyClassic.com) Call and talk to Stan. They have everything you need to convert your truck to 5-lug disc brakes. These guys are not just parts vendors,... the own and drive these 67-72 trucks. To me there is ZERO advantage of using 71-72 parts. In the old days,... that's what you had to do. Now there are disc brake spindles for your '67. Call ECE. Also,... look at 72BlckButy's "Blank Slate thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=353633 Nate's truck is the cover truck for the new LMC catelog. But it rolls on ECE suspension.

Here Is My 67' Like i said it has not been washed in two years, except by mother nature.
Last time i drove it was a year ago. She is ready to see some action, I am going to clear out some stuff/projects out of the shop and get started. My front windshield is leaking condensation on the inside, and it has that foggy look in the corners of the glass time to replace it and the seal. It came with a Shell, but it is on there to protect the wood bed right now. When it is done, that shell is coming off. Here are some pictures. These pictures were taken on a very overcast/cloudy and dark day, it may look better when it is a sunny day & washed

This truck was painted about two years ago with 5 coats color, & 5 coats of clear.
I was going to rub out the paint, to get more depth and shine, But I lost interest/other projects and it sat. Since i sold my other Truck, and now i am Truckless, now it is time, for Project C10.

Just lurking around and found this old thread. I happened across a set of 71 spindles, rotors, bearings, calipers, and new pads on CL the other day. Picked them up last night for only $80. Checked out the FAQ thread so I can see that I'll still need MC, prop valve, hoses, tie rods and ball joints, but then I came across this thread.
I get that there isn't an advantage to using these old parts, but is there an advantage to using new ones or does it really matter? I like the height my truck sits at right now so I don't really need drop spindles. Pads look perfect and the rotors don't look bad either. I suppose the calipers may need replacing, but at that point it's still cheaper than a set of $270 spindles or a swap kit right? Is there something I'm missing or did I actually get a good deal this time?

I change the front drums to disc brakes and I'm having an issue with the master cylinder do I have to change the brake booster and master cylinder or can I just use a master cylinder from some other year vehicle some help would be much appreciated thank you
