Missouri YOM license plates

Since we cannot get a straight answer from our license plate beureau, thought I would ask you guys. We bought a 1968 license plate for our 68 C10
We have the paperwork for the YOM plates but no one can tell me if I have to have one or two plates. Any ideas. Again, this is for Missouri. Thanks, Fred

Re: Missouri YOM license plates

I was told when I bought my 1948 plate for my ford coupe that since in 48 there was only one plate that is all I needed. I have yet to get it on the road so i don't know for sure but the way I understand it is if in 68 vehicles were supposed to have 2 plates in Missouri then you should have 2 matching plates to put on the vehicle. I don't know how many plates were required then though.

Re: Missouri YOM license plates

Standard issue is two plates. I know alot of people that have been stopped in missouri for only having the back one on. My sons are some of them. They think there vehicle looks better with out one in the front. But i keep saying its the law. one of these days they will get a ticket for it.

I don't run a front tag on my 99 trans am ws6 because I have the filler in the bumper because it looks better. If that's the only ticket I get when pulled over in that car I'm ok with it.

Here in Iowa if the vehicle is over 25 years old you only have to run the rear plate. You have to have the other plate in the vehicle at all times though, so you still have to have two plates.

PM Nate "72blckbuty" I think he did some MO research on the subject.

Are you just running the one tag on your 67? We bought ours from Larry as well, really seems to know his stuff and has nice items. Did you see the year correct inspection stickers he had??

Re: Missouri YOM license plates

LockDoc,
Iowa Code 321.37 DISPLAY OF PLATES.
2. Registration plates issued for a motor vehicle which is model
year 1948 or older, and reconstructed or specially constructed
vehicles built to resemble a model year 1948 vehicle or older, other
than a truck registered for more than five tons, motorcycle, or truck
tractor, may display one registration plate on the rear of the
vehicle if the other registration plate issued to the vehicle is
carried in the vehicle at all times when the vehicle is operated on a
public highway.

Does not cover our trucks, need to have two to keep you in good graces with the law.

He will probably be back at Columbia in a few weeks for the swapmeet. Ask him about the stickers, they are really cool. Thanks, Fred

Re: Missouri YOM license plates

I guess its still up in the air,When i tagged my 67 they issued two plates and maybe its because the DMV is not clear and its just easy for the to give two.

Re: Missouri YOM license plates

I have YOM plates on all my old trucks and cars. 72 was the first year they issued 2 plates, so 71 and older you will only find one plate. And MO truck tags dont work, you have to use car tags. Truck tags use the same numbering system as Bus or heavy GVW tags currently use, so they will not work. I have never had an issure with just one tag

Re: Missouri YOM license plates

Not sure on Missouri but Kansas only has one plate on the rear. This might work out ok since my uncle used to buy all the left over kansas plates every year from the courthouse. I have unopened, numerically numbered, Kansas plates for cars and trucks from about 67-74, different counties, different years. For example my dad has a 70 Chevelle so i dug up a 1970 Kansas car tag that the plate number is 1970, best part is the 70 Kansas plates are red like his Chevelle. I will have to look at the truck plate boxes to see if i can find one that will fit my truck, there are thousands of plates, so i havn't looked at all of them yet. Joseph

Joesjunk is exactly right, however....

Due to the MO DMV changing the design of the plate and the numbering system, year of manufacture trucks plates are becoming available. For instance, I am running a single (1) YOM truck plate on my truck legally approved by the MO DMV with documentation to prove it.

Unfortunately the process needed to add the plate is difficult if you are not in close proximity with the JC office. If a reasonable distance away, you have to mail in your documentation and a picture of the plate. You will then wait to either receive approval or disapproval of your plate. DO NOT CALL INTO THE MO DMV TO VERIFY THE PLATE OVER THE PHONE!!!! I "verified" my plate over the phone (prior to purchasing) that it was not in use and low and be hold when I went to transfer the plates... "Sorry, the plate is currently in use."
