Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks?

Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks or was the 14 bolt the only heavy duty axle? If they did, what models and years? Were they only in duallys? Only in 1 tons? I can't seem to find a clear answer of when the D70 was used.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks?

The dana 70 was used in the dually pickups from 73 to 87/91

It was a wide track axle;the 14 bolt GM axle was used on c/k30 cab and chassis and single wheel pickups...also on c/k 20 from 73-80

Re: Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks?

I also have an 1987 one ton dually, it has a dana 70hd in it.

I have heard that the later crew cab duallies 1988-1991? could be had with a 14 bolt in the dually width (72" wms to wms) which I would like but have yet to find. Can anybody conferm this?
If it was a single rear wheel than from what I have found online and i my junk yard experence the 14 bolt was the only option.

Re: Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks?

The duallies all had the 70HD until a weird changeover in 1988 or 1989 where they started using the 14-bolt 72" WMS to WMS version in some of the trucks...We have a few 89-91 single cab dually flatbed trucks at work and all of them have the 14-bolt but I have seen '90 CC duallies with the 70HD.

My '87 CC Dually has the 70HD as well.

Re: Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks?

All single wheels were 14 bolts
All duallies were either 14 bolt or Dana 70HD

Re: Did GM put the Dana 70 in square body trucks?

Great info guys! Thanks alot. I wonder if the 88-91 14-bolt dually axles (with the 72" WMS) could be converted to a single rear wheel with a hub swap? That may be a dumb question.
