holly pro jection..etc
...anybody running holly pro jection or something in the lines of the throttle body that retro fits on a 4barrel intake...just wondering how they work,if there worth the money..gains in horsepower? and gas milage?.....thanks guys

I've got a Holley Pro-jection 4D on my '68 C10. It is junk, and I plan on pulling it off and going back to a carb.
Now don't get me wrong, I love EFI. It's just that the Pro-jection is a poor implementation of it. It uses a system that guesses airflow based on RPM and load instead of measuring it with a MAP or MAF sensor. Holley's newer TBI system (Commander 950) is supposed to be better though I don't know anyone actually using it. My brother installed an Edelbrock Pro-Flo EFI on a big block and had almost no complaints once he got it tuned right.

I HAVE THE 2D ON MY TRUCK. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR PERFORMANCE I WOULD GO WITH MULTI POINT OR STICK WITH A CARB...DON'T TAKE THIS WRONG..THE THROTTLE IS RESPOSIVE AND IT CRANKS RIGHT UP AND IDLES UNLIKE MY CARB SET UP..IT'S GREAT FOR COMMUTING.
IT'S SOUNDS LIKE DARCANE MIGHT HAVE BEEN EXPECTING A LOT MORE. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.. I GAVE $750 WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN SOME CARBS.

I have to agree with gmc67swb. I've got a pro-jection 2d system as well, and I'm actually pretty impressed with it. It is NOT a super high performance solution. But I was looking for driveability and fuel economy. I got both. Fuel economy is up over 50% from the square-bore that was on the truck. Note that this is mostly due to the closed-loop kit (i.e. O2 sensor) that is an optional accessory. The truck starts right up on the first turn, I don't have any rough running at idle either. I had the 2D Projection Setup. It was such pain to install and adjust. I traded it for a Carter 600 cfm carb. The guy I traded it to had it for about a month and he traded it off for some valve covers for his small block. It is good to use it as trade material, because most people don't know it is JUNK.
If I was to do it again I would get the Edelbrock MPFI setup. |

we have an after market TPI unit (made by Arizona Speed and Marine, www.azspeed.com ) on one of our trucks, they are kind of pricey but they are definetly worth the money

I'm looking at going with the MegaSquirt home-grown ECM and a TBI setup myself...it does have a MAP sensor, and is also (IIRC) adaptable easily to handle a MAF sensor instead. It's also set up for operation either with or without an O2 sensor. A nifty system, really...and quite possibly the cheapest way I can get easily programmable FI on my truck. A TPI setup (which could also be controlled by the MegaSquirt) would be too expensive - the baseplate alone is nearly $300 for my Vortec heads. The factory '96-'99ish Vortec fuel injection is more or less unprogrammable AFAIK, and I don't think it's an amazing performer...but then again, I may be wrong on the latter...however, I think it is also a sequential setup instead of a batch-fire setup.
Hmm...in the process of typing that out, I just realized that I could possibly control the stock Vortec setup with a MS ECM...

My neighbor had the 4 port system and spent several hundred having a 'Pro' set it up for his 392 SB Ford Stroker in his Shelby Cobra. It was a POS as the others said. Always ran way too rich. He sold it for $300 or $500 and bought a Holley 750 or 850. It runs great now, Starts great, he's real happy with it. Had everything tuned and Dynoed out at 400+ hp at the rear tires!! Oh! 6-Speed transmission of course.

I'm pretty sure it's not my expectations that are off.
My Pro Jection has two flat spots in the acceleration under part throttle. This was really annoying when I had a manual tranny. On really hot days it will stumble and nearly die at low rpms. The throttle sticks a little and I am 100% sure it is because of the throttle body, not the linkage. That's just what I can remember off the top of my head. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to get it tuned up perfectly myself and never managed to get everything worked out. I had a couple of mechanics take a look at it who were supposed to be experts at EFI with no luck. I've run into many people online with Pro-jection and most of them complain about the same set of issues. I'm honestly surprised that there are two people on this message board who have had positive experiences with it.

.....thanks guys...i've seen alot of horsepower and torque numbers along with gas milage on alot of fuel injected motors..mostly tpi set ups but i thought i could maybe get it done a little more cheaper with one of the retro fit kits..but so far it's not sounding good.........thanks again guys

My Projection 2 barrel set up sucked. Never could tune it right.
I wound up cutting the wiring harness apart to get the nice colorful wiring for another project. I still have the ECM sitting on my shelf. I sold the pump and throttle body. Seems like I recovered about 75.00 out of the original 500.00 I spent
