John Deere Blitz Black paint?

Anybody ever use Blitz black paint on their trucks? I have been reading its pretty good stuff.

No, but have used John Deere corn head grease for a long time. Great in steering boxes.

That is the "go-to" paint for hot rods. Durable, cheap, looks good.

Here is the paint that would be better to use. Price wise I have no idea what a tractor paint cost. But there products work and hold up. To paint a fleet side 8 foot truck in side and out 2 gallons will get you there.

You need UV protection. Paint for farm implements do not have that I am aware of. If I am wrong , ok I would still not use it

I painted my 66 Fleetside with it 5 years ago. I wanted the look it gave and I never wanted to baby the truck, I use it to cruise and haul garden stuff. The paint has held up quite well in my opinion, not perfect but I always get second looks and thumbs up.

It was $30 a gallon in 2005.

Here's a huge thread from Hotrodder.com. They finally closed it but it has information that will help anyone decide whatever they want to decide. I'm no chemist, but there are chemists on there, but it was inexpensive and did what I wanted it to do.

I painted my 54 ford blitz black it is cheap and turns out nice, i wanted the flat black hot rod primer look but with actual paint durability, the only problem i had was getting some in California since it is illegal here, but i got it. im pretty sure "Markb01" painted his stepside gmc blitz black and might be able to give you some tips...as far as mixing ratio i just followed the mixing ratio on the can...google blitz black and youll have tons of information.

$60 for two gallons of JDB vs 300 for two gallons of the Hot rod flatz shows why many use it....

I've seen several trucks painted with it and they look great. Plus, it is made to hold up to the elements since farm equipment is used outside So it's pretty durable too.

That being said, I saw a hot rod flatz red paint job in person (5150's roadster blazer) and it looks great...

Thank you Gents, just what I thought, At 174.00 a gallon for the JBD,I think I will go with the Blitz Black, if you can,t trust a farmer and rancher in Texas that paints their tractors and implements with it who can you trust. Especially at 34.00 a gallon at John Deere. Thanks for your opinions.

Forgot to add, 8 parts paint to 1 part thinner, as for UV rating, here in this Texas sun, if UV rating is not good with this paint, than I don't know what product would be .

i have used a lot of the ppg synthetic enamels over the past years ppg #ALK200 can be mixed in most any color and can be used with or without hardener and comes ready to spray right out of the can,if you need to thin use the recommended xylene as a thinner and for $42.00 a gallon you cant beat it and it holds up very well to uv for many years

If your wanting to repaint with different paint in the future jd blitz black will need to be totally removed before you do so , as far as I,m aware this stuff wont let other paints stick to it. I found this to be true with my trailer that I painted in blitz bl and when I practiced my striping on it even after a week or so when you rub on the stripes they wipe off.
Other paints may work but other than that the blck is as tough as nails.

I painted my truck with Blitz Black in 2009. It does live in a garage, but has been driven in all weather conditions. On the rare occasions it gets washed, the finish looks the same as when the paint was applied. There has been no perceivable deterioration so far.

I always thin with Acrylic Enamel Reducer when spraying any enamel paint. It’s more expensive than acetone or mineral spirits and must be purchased at an auto paint supply store, but it allows you to change the properties of how the paint flows and the finish it produces. Many articles I’ve read suggest 6 to 1, 8 to 1, or 10 to 1 - paint to thinner ratio. I tested 7 different mixes before I came up with the finish I wanted. My final primary batch of paint was mixed 1 part slow temp acrylic enamel reducer to 10 parts paint, and sprayed on a day with temps in the high 80’s. It came out with a perfect flat/satin finish nearly identical to what comes out of the spray can, but in a much heavier flow coat.

I have been very pleased with this paint. It’s cheap and durable, and I’ve had more compliments on the truck wearing this paint than I ever did when it was gloss black lacquer. It hasn’t received any maintenance other than being washed.

Here are a few tips:

1. Test mix and test spray something else before you commit to paint the vehicle. This may require several tests until you get the finish you want. Apply a thin mist coat, wait 20 minutes, apply 1-2 more wet coats and then let it dry for about 30-45 minutes. That's what the final results will look like.

2. Mix more than you need to complete the whole job all at once before you start. You can always pour the leftover back into the can, if you do not use hardener.

3. Hardener will make it last longer and flow out nice, but the hardener contains isocyanates and should not be sprayed without breathing gear and a full bunny suit. Also don't use hardener if spraying over lacquer or it is likely to lift the old paint.

painted chassis with the stuff for a few years...once its on, its hell to get off...gums up flap discs and sanding pads

I agree Marks truck is very sharp looking.

I went with a gun smoke grey and burgundy. But I guess the only down side is "if" there is repair to be done in the future the paint removal process.


here is the two colors I am using I have to upload more pics. the firewall is the Grey, and the dash and roof ( dusty) is the burgundy. These are single stage flat paints, with pearl and metallic in them. In the sun the burgundy really pops.

I had to laugh about the CA paint deal, we have a hard time getting lead weights to the wheels. Eveything has gone to steel, so we use dyna beads for the bikes now, but the amount of weights they have to install out here now is stupid as steel ways nothing compared to lead.

I too would go with the Hotrod Flatz or even a 2 stage with black and a flattner in the clear.

i have it on mine, blitz black is the satin, $30gal. , got it at the JD store in goodyear.
i believe the ratio on the can calls for 10:1

So i'm curious to know if the "blitz" paint comes in anything other than black?

I was watching a TV show, one of the West Coast Custom ones, and they were showing some of the projects that Jessee James had done. One of them was a 50's chevy truck and it was painted like a rust/red dead flat color. Looked real sharp.

Mark's truck is drop dead beautiful. I love that flat look.

Doing some reading they also say you can get it at TSC. It is labelled Valspar Tractor & Implement Spray. Just repeating what I have read and that buying it at TSC doesnt have the JD markup. Can anyone confirm this?
