Hello,
I live in Connecticut and prior to registering a vehicle it needs to go through a VIN verification at DMV. I am ready to purchase a truck that is beautifully restored but the VIN plate is attached with round rivets not rosette rivets. I see so much of this. Here is a good example. Presently this truck is for sale on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-...item256d3116c2 . This is not the truck I want to buy but there is a picture of the VIN tag if you blow it up you can see that that vehicle has round rivets attaching the VIN plate.
I am supposed to go purchase a beautiful 72 today it is currently registered in another state. The owner is an older very nice guy. He registered the vehicle with no problems. I asked about the rivets and he told me they are round and he removed the VIN plate when doing restoration body work on the cab.
Should I pass on a beautifully restored truck at what I consider a very good price for this reason? Is this a real problem or am I imagining a problem that does not exist?

I wouldn't worry about it.

Does the frame match the VIN? (it will have the last part of the VIN stamped on the top of the frame near the steering box). If it has a SPID on the glovebox door, does it match? New York will not have a title for a vehicle that old - it will be a transferable registration. You might also want to get a notarized bill of sale. Don't know what your state will want.

i see at major swapmeets on craigs list on a regular basis advertised in hemmings motor news etc

i use google to find stuff too quite often

Not sure if these were sarcastic or not as I already know what they are and what they look like.
I googled it anyway (again) and there are thousands of threads from people asking the same questions and feebay has zero results. I also realize there my be none for sale now!
Fact remains the question was genuine from the original post as I am sure there are many looking for a SOLID reputable source to buy these from on a reoccuring basis.

Not to jump in the middle of a rivet thread, but if there's any question about the VIN, you don't want to be buying it until you've confirmed its right. You want to match that vin to at least two other places (frame and one of the 'hidden' VINs).

If you get stuck with a truck that was stolen 20 years ago, you can lose it. Here in WA you can take a vehicle to the state patrol to get it checked (and in fact, when importing a vehicle you have to).

Okay, where are the "hidden" VINs? I only know of them being on top of the driver's side frame rail in two spots: forward of the front suspension crossmember and about where the drivers door is. Where else are they located? Any where on the cab besides the VIN tag?

They were not. Some have said that the rivets are illegal to sell or possess so you can not sell them on here or post direct links to them. I think the board owners can be held liable if they allow anything illegal to be provided on the board. Hence the indirect answers.

Paint job has orange peel all over. Lots of dirt specks in paint. Could wet sand and buff that out. Problem is very poor body work lots of dings all over that should have been fixed prior to topcoat. Inner fenders rotted pretty bad. Radiator support rotted. Portion of the frame cut out on driver side in between the engine and grill. Undercoating sprayed all over frame and it is hard to tell how the frame looks. Drive train dripping fluids. Not sure how many miles on the 283. Holes in outer front grill where a homemade bug shield use to be mounted. Visible from outside. New rubber seals on front and rear windshield. Rubber on door windows shot and taped around when paint was haphazardly sprayed. Truck floats all over the road. Guy has it listed for $7500 was going to sell it for $6k I rented a trailer and went there with the intention of paying cash and bringing it home. Seems like a shame to poorly paint and unprepared vehicle. Wood in bed homemade and rough sawn unprotected on bottom. In my opinion needs lots of work to get up to the kind of truck that I would want to drive but is definitely restorable. Probably a truck of interest for someone here that is why I posted the link.

Oh one more thing impossible to see any VIN numbers on the frame because of the thick undercoating sprayed all over it. To me it does not drive or handle like a 61,000 original mile vehicle. The shiny CL pics distort this truck. The paint job is crappy, body work subpar, it floats all over the road, and the legitimacy of the VIN is in question and front fenders in front have holes on the inside. He patched the door bottoms and fenders and cab corners and rockers.
