Head light and LED upgrade sources?

Hey guys, I tried to search these but all the threads that came up were either old, or had no real info in them. So can you guys help me out? I am looking for a good vendor to get LED bulbs from. I want to replace all light bulbs in my 72 with LED's. Also, I'd like to jump up to HID head lights. I am on a budget, so what is out there for a budget? I kept hearing guys saying to use Jeep Liberty housings, but I want to make sure that's correct before I go shelling out money. My brother has purchased a couple of HID kits off of ebay and they are awesome. Almost too bright. But, anything is better than what I'm driving currently. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ryan.

Re: Head light and LED upgrade sources?

I upgraded my dash lights off of ebay. Shipping takes like 2 weeks, because it is shipping straight from Asia. Take a little time to shop around for cheapest shipped price and pay attention to the number of leds per bulb. I bought 2 packs of #194 bulbs for about $2 shipped. Can't beat a dollar a bulb.

The most impressive lighting upgrade I have found is the led festoon bulb for the dome light. I was absolutely blown away by the difference in lighting. Here again I found a dome light festoon bulb for about $1.50 shipped on ebay.

Ebay also has cheap cheap cheap bulbs for backup and tail lights (all exterior lights really). Just shop around and do your research. Look for bulbs with leds on all surfaces, not just the forward facing ones. Remember leds are very directional. They are brighter up close, but the light doesn't seem to carry as far. That is why I haven't upgraded my taillights yet.

Also curious to hear about the Jeep headlights. Are the Jeep lights plastic or glass? Also make sure you do the headlight relay upgrade. Makes a huge difference. I grab my relay from the junkyard. A handful plus the socket wiring for about $5. Relays are good to have around for electric fans and such as well.

Hope some of this helps.

Has anyone tried these? http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs...0001&langId=-1

They are DOT Highway rated. They get installed in a lot of the vehicle here in Afghanistan. They don't seem to shake apart due to rough roads like the filament lights. I'll try to post some pic's.

Re: Head light and LED upgrade sources?

How long have you had the cheap ebay led's in your truck? I'm just worried that you get what you pay for.

Blue666, do those LED head lights illuminate deep out or just close up? Thanks for the feed back guys.

Re: Head light and LED upgrade sources?

The leds have been in my truck since July. The way I look at it, all of the leds are likely manufactured in Asia. I'm just buying from the supplier. Honestly think about how inexpensive something like an led should be. They are only expensive here because of markup imho. I haven't had any trouble and for 10% or less of the price I am willing to change a few bulbs if issues arise. Ymmv, but I think ebay ftw. Just make sure to compare and not buy the first results of your search.

I'm going to pass on these. I called a local supplier and he rattled off $279ea. I said forget it!

Re: Head light and LED upgrade sources?

I bought led taillights, halogen headlights and the harness/relay upgrade from LMC. The taillights are very nice sealed units and are very bright. I noticed in the latest catalog that they now have led front parking/turn signal and side-marker replacements too. You might want to check them out as I think that the full replacement led assemblies are better looking and brighter than just using led bulbs.

WOW! I did not expect that price. Now I know why I only see them on government vehicles.

Thanks for the price check!! Send the wheel chair to Aisle 7 to pick me up off the floor.

Re: Head light and LED upgrade sources?

I've had great luck with Kensun HID conversions (I've bought 4 now via Amazon.com). Sealed transformers, all quality components. The oldest is about a year, so can't speak to longevity, but they've made it a year!

I went with "Blue Thunder" I think is the name... it's bluish but not blue (I was trying to match my factory HIDs, but they're a little more blue than that).

Re: Head light and LED upgrade sources?

I did the HID conversion to my 66 Econoline about 6 mths ago. I got a set of headlight capsules from autozone, cost me $40 for the pair plus approx $60 for a relay, wireing and bulbs then about 1 hour for install and the lights are so nice. I am planning the same conversion for the burb. they also have the small round capsules for GMCs for about the same price

as long as you get the lower wattage (55 watt) bulbs you don't need the relay. but if you go hid then you will need the relay as the headlight and dimmer switchs cant handle the higher load
