Talk me out of this..

Found a 65 GMC kinda in a barn. It runs burns some oil. 4 speed with 305 V6.

its a 3/4 ton and needs some (a lot) of body work.

Price is 500, anybody see a downside to this besides time and money?

Re: Talk me out of this..

Need more info & pics. The downside that I see right away is that it's too far away from me.

Re: Talk me out of this..

If the 305 is burning some oil, that has had to have been an abused engine at one point, Love to see someone save another V-6 but check it well.

Re: Talk me out of this..

"I have a 1965 GMC 3/4 ton truck for sale. It has a rare 305 V-6 engine in it (yes they do exist). It does run and drive, but does burn oil. I use it for hauling brush and trash to the dump, but need to thin out my herd of vehicles. As you can see the body is rough. When I bought the truck a little over a year ago it still had split rims on it so replaced those with 16.5 in rims and tires I bought used. The used tires are rough but they've held air so I've just used them the past year. The truck would make a good project for someone who has the time and space to take it on. I don't have either. Surprisingly, it does have power steering"

Re: Talk me out of this..

For $500 I'd park it in my front yard and grow flowers out of the bed until I had the time & $$$$ to bring it back.

Jan of 12 the float stuck in the carb and she burned... The truck is back in MI now and being re-built AGAIN by my Dad & Brother.

Re: Talk me out of this..

To me, a running, driving, tagged, 1965 GMC (or Chevy) truck is definitely worth $500. Remember, he's ASKING $500....that's means he'll take less.

So what, it's rough... Use it as a Home Depot hauler and fix it up mechanically as you go. Those beat-up "dog pound" trucks are worth their weight in gold when you've got to do a messy job and you don't want to screw up your nice late-model truck. Or a buddy's truck that you borrowed.

A beater truck is a must-have.

Re: Talk me out of this..

Chevyrestoguy and Perro,

Thanks for validation what I was thinking.

I do want a truck for those odd jobs and hey it runs!

And best of all, got all that stuff put away from the move in November so the garage is empty. The wife doesn't need to park inside does she?

Going to have a lookie loo this weekend. Don't really know what to look for but I'm sure you guys would have some tips.

I'm an Oldsmobile guy carwise and I was thinking an Olds 455 would look sweet in there!

Re: Talk me out of this..

Sounds like a fair price if it has a clean title.

Re: Talk me out of this..

heck when i bought my 65 gmc for $500 it was in much much worse condition than that one, Mine was highly optioned with a powerglide, power brakes, power steering and posi with leaf springs. Man wish i never got rid of it. I think you should get it. Offer the seller a fare price

Re: Talk me out of this..

Go for it. Especially if it runs. I spent more for mine that ran but didn't move. Fix it up as you go. It will probably need 500 or 600 worth of hoses, fluid changes and such to make it reliable, but you can't find a good running, reliable truck for 1000.

Not as of yet. Try to find time for the 5+ hours round trip to see it.
