So my grandpa has a 1984 Dodge 350 with 7,000 original miles on it. He bought it from the Lakefield Fire department here in Minnesota. It has a light bar and electronic siren from the 80s or so on it. He wants to take it all off the truck even though I've tried to talk him out of it since I think it's a really cool truck. He said I could have the light bar and siren, but I'm really torn on whether or not I want to put it on my Chevy. I've always wanted an ex-fire pickup like his, but I'm not sure if I want it on mine. What are your opinions?

I'm going with no light bar, unless you actually are a firefighter and you had a use for it. If the truck you were going to put it on actually was a firetruck previously it would be neat, but otherwise tacky.

That is a neat truck though, 7,000 original miles!

Did they never go on any calls? My truck was a 78 model, and we have a VERY low call volume, and it still had 78,000 miles when I bought it from the department.

But since we are on the subject, I do have an old fire truck. I painted over the old door lettering, although I sometimes wish I would have left it there. The light bar had to go though.

Thanks for the reply! I'm sure up in Lakefield there wasn't a whole lot of excitement when that pickup was in service. That's a really nice dually you have, if mine really was an ex fire truck i would be more tempted to put the light bar on. Maybe someday I'll inherit that Dodge so I guess I could always keep the light bar for that, I just hope he doesn't decide to paint over the lettering.

if you do some towing or work you might wanna change the red lens for orange ones if it exist

I love old brush trucks, but i wouldn't put a light bar on your truck i just think it would look out of place IMO

im going to be making eather a 3+3 or my 78 a search and rescue tribute truck with lights and siren on it and will be painting it like the air force SAR aircrafts because im a SAR volunteer in BC

i think they r neat......simple go by another old GM firetruck!! fixer up so u have a place to store the light

That's tempting! Except all of the fire departments around my area are small enough that they aren't going to be getting rid of their old Chevys any time soon

these were all fire service CUCVS, two M1028s and a M1008, still have the one.

that would be pretty cool. i was in search and rescue fo a short time and i wouldnt mind getting back into it

Put it on if you're going to make the rest of the truck look like it belongs. I have many pictures of GM light fire equipment.

If I decided to put the light bar on my truck, I would definitely letter the doors and make the rest of it look like it belongs.

I agree that it can make for a nice theme for a fixed up truck. The lights, pushbar, door lettering, etc. look great if done right. The trick is to either make it look pretty much original and untouched or go the opposite direction and have it look custom but with that old school flare. Your truck is already red with flames and a pushgaurd and CB, so why not?
