charging system ?'s
My '71 burb doesn't want to keep the battery charged. I unhooked the battery cable and the engine died.I put on a new alt. and voltage reg but the truck still dies when the cables unhooked. Any suggestions on what else it could be? I've also replaced the starter/solenoid in the last 6 months.

Sounds like it is time to start chasing wires.
I would pull the alt off and have a parts store check it, most will do it for free. Also, the reg is cheap enough that you could just replace it (again) just to rule out a dead part even though it is new. (what are they...12 bucks?) After that, it is time to start looking at wires and getting out the 'ole multi meter. |

i changed the alt and reg and condensor off of another burb just to rule out the possibilities like you said.I was afraid of the idea of chasin' the wires-looks like it'll be a long night tomorrow.

That's OK, i just discovered (at midnight) that mine isn't charging either. And There is no way I can call off or be late for work.
Looks like I'm hooking up the charger and crossing my fingers that there is enough light to drive by in the morning. |

I agree with longhorn man..
I thought Ihad a charging problem also, but I think now it might be my ignition switch. I was installing dual electric fans the other day. While trying to find a good lead for the fan relay I noticed that on the output of the switch I had 6 volts with it in the off position. Nice huh? |
