Favorite Rust Mort?

I've been re-doing my doors on my "project" and I have the doors gutted out. I've sanded and wire brushed but I still have that rust at the edges. I was watching a You-Tube thing on repairing mid-late 60's doors and the guy said to use a "rust mort" to deal with the rust. I've used a spray on rust mort a number of years ago ...wasn't all that impressed with it. ...SO anybody have some suggesting for a "good" rust mort? ...THX!

I’ve personally never heard of Rust Mort, but a quick search show it to be very popular. In checking a few other sites some seem to think it’s the best product on the market while others prefer POR Prep & Ready because it doesn’t dry sticky:

My own experience with Picklex 20 is that it will preserve bare metal indefinitely as long as it is kept indoors and dry. About 10 years ago I had a mint condition GMC grille soda blasted to bare metal. I sprayed it with Picklex 20 and it looks exactly the same today. I’ve also used it over bare metal when sitting around in the garage for weeks or months and it keeps the metal completely free of rust. I just can’t think of a specific project where I’ve deliberately used it as a prep agent under paint.

I’ve used both of the above products along with Corroless, but haven’t used any of them inside a door.

I was somewhat disappointed with previous applications of POR-15, so when it came to the doors on my 1960 GMC I stripped everything bare that I could and coated everything with Zero Rust.

That was done in 1998 and the inside of the doors look exactly the same with no deterioration.

Once the ZR cured I applied 3M Body Schutz as a sound deadener/top coat. If I had it to do over again I would have used U-POL Raptor bedliner inside the doors instead of Body Schutz because it’s a hardened product.

Have always brushed the RustMort on. I like it and it totally stops the rust from progressing. A couple of good coats allowing to dry in between. You can paint over it but will be rough. I like to use it in those hard to get places.... Good luck.

I have used RustMort and another brand I can't recall at the moment. Typically I'll use them in areas that I can't get in with sanding disc, grinder, wire wheel, etc. It actually converts the chemical makeup of the rust.

I like rust seal. Here is a picture of the bottle and a couple light brackets I coated. I have not used POR15 though so I cant say how it compares.

That's what it does, turns it from iron oxide to black oxide.

POR15, which I have used, does not convert the rust, it seals it and without oxygen, it won't continue to rust.

Im with hotroddr SEM is a great rust treatment is awesome, they make a product thats a adheasive/tar/etc. remover that is called SEM-Solve it works great and will take stuff off new paint without harming it its a great product too !

If i can find the recipe you can make your own. It is not a complicated formula. we use it at Dow chemical , they just mix their own..I used to have it but don't no where it is.
