im getting a gassy smell comming from the oil still. ive replaced the fuel pump, had a friend tune up the carb, put new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. at this point im at a loss. im thinking mabe the carb is too much for the engine? its an edelbrock 750 on a sbc 350. anyone got any ideas?

Could be too much carb,but normally 750 will work and not dump raw gas down the intake. It must be leaking down or do you need to crank it a good bit to start? What do your plugs look like? What do they smell like?

cranks up verry easy and the plugs looked to be normal no real gassy smell to them either

How many miles on the motor?

previous owner said about 10k on a fresh rebuild but not really for sure

Carb could be leaking past when your parked. Double check the pump,wouldnt be the first time somebody had a ''new'' part that was factory broken.

If your getting gasoline in the oil there is really only two ways for it to get there. If the truck idles and runs satisfactorily, Either the replacement fuel pump is leaking internally or the carb is leaking fuel into the engine.
And i would not suspect an Edelbrock carb too often without severe drivability issues. Edelbrocks are not known for leaking into the intake like a quadra jet. You said the carb was "tuned up" please define what that means. Was it overhauled or was the idle mix and idle speed just tinkered with?

Check the pcv valve if it smells like gas maybe you have a internally leaking intake gasket. but that would show up on your plugs and maybe puff some smoke too

and i checked the pcv earlier on cause of an oil leak thought it might have been building crank case pressure

personally I would lean towards a bad "new" Fuel pump. it was probably made in China then put in a US box to be sold as a quality part.

thats kinda what i was thinking. but i had a friend say that it might be rings too so im gonna yank the pump off get another one and run a compression test just in case..just wanted to get some more opinions on it tho. im thinking of getting like a holley or edelbrock any idea of what gallon per hr id need?

I am guessing the floats in the carb need adjusting or a carb rebuild is needed. $45 dollars
And follow the directions and you are ready. I did it two weeks ago because of the same reason, gas leaking by to the oil.
