Spare Tire Mounts?

What do all of you out there use for a spare tire mount? I have mine just thrown in the back, but would like to clean up the mount situation, any pictures of clean mounts? Thanks

Re: Spare Tire Mounts?

Under the bed in the stock location is pretty clean if you aren't running a tank back there

Re: Spare Tire Mounts?

Thanks but I have the fuel tank in back, and I don't have cutout for side mount, thought maybe some of you might have fabricated some kind of mount for inside the bed.

Re: Spare Tire Mounts?

You might be able to modify a fleetside in bed spare tire mount. I have a pic of one...I haven't heard of a fleetside using this style of mount in the bed, but like most things, if you have the time and money...it could be made to work.

Re: Spare Tire Mounts?

I have the stock under bed mount and though it’s pretty clean it is a total pain to get the tire up there. The only way is with a floor jack and that was still a pain. It could be harder because the tire I’m using is the same as what’s on the rest of the truck and is wider than the 7” stock tire. There is one plus besides getting the tire out of sight, it adds weight behind the axel so the ride is a little better than when the bed is empty. I’m running 235/75- 15 (stock rims) but if you go to a skinny tire it should be much easier

Why don't you chase up a spare tyre winch as found under some small jap trucks and over here in all holden utes from 1971 to today. They just use a crank handle to wind up or down no other lock device needed when wound up.

Re: Spare Tire Mounts?

That looks like a better way than the factory mount, as long as you can get to the crank. I had something similar on my cab over Ford many years ago, but it was a winch type with a roller. The crank was on the driver’s side near the bumper and the cable went to the center where a block or roller guided the cable pick up the tire. Worked very well and picked up the 11.50 16.5 wheel easily

Re: Spare Tire Mounts?

another idea I've seen for fleetside beds is to get another wheel tub, and invert it rightin front of the one in the bed. Obviously you'll have to cut your wood to make it fit, but it cradles the spare, and you can use a mount similar to the in bed fleetside mount, except the wheel will be down lower so it doesn't obscure your view as much.
