If I shoot some oil in the cylinders, then test it again, and the numbers go up, then it needs rings throughout right?? Just double checking.

I cannot believe how much antifreeze this 305 holds. When we changed the lower heater core hose, we drained out 5 gallons, yes, 5 gallons of fluid. When putting it back in, I have put back in 6 gallons so far. I think it's about done though. I looked it up in the manual, and it says that the capacity is 32 quarts. 8 gallons! I looked it up in another manual, and the 396 only uses 24 quarts, and the 454, 20 quarts. LOL

Also, I need to ask something of other 305A owners. I need to know how long the oil dipstick is from the tip to where it seats on the tube please. The manual says that the 305A takes 6 quarts of oil with the filter. I poured one quart into the filter, and 5 into the engine, and it is still not on the dipstick. When we drained the old oil out, I think we got just under 8 quarts out of it. Is there an extra large oil pan option? I haven't seen anything that talks about it, but who knows!

I got to thinking about the no start issue. We didn't fill the bowl on the carb. I looked in the sight plug, and couldn't see any gas in there at all. This weekend, We will take the fuel line off of the carb, and turn it over, to see if the pump is even working, then fill the bowl, and try some more if it is!!

I forget which engine you have, but here's all of 'em:

305A = 6 w filter
305B = 10 w filter (yes, TEN. Buy Exxon stock lol!)
305C = 10 w filter
305D = 6 w filter
305E = 6 w filter

Glad you got her turning over. These are really fun and bulletproof engines. I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

I have the D. Your dipstick might be short or broken off. I'd not put more than 6 in to be safe and keep from foaming. I'll measure mine this weekend for ya if no one pipes up by then. She's away from home till Saturday.

The dipstick has the markings on it, so its not broken off, but I'm thinking it may not be the original one.

That dipstick looks to be correct to me. Unfortunately, my burb is 200 miles away so I can't measure it for you. But, one more thing, just check and make sure the actual tube is seated in the block and/or oil pan properly.

I thought of that, and looked at it a little bit. It looked like it was seated in there properly to me. It is solid, and doesn't appear to have been pulled out any. I will measure how far it sticks out tonight, and see if anyone can verify those measurements too.

Take a look in this photo and see if your dipstick looks the same height from the exhaust manifold bolt to the top of the tube.

Also, look at the difference in the oil pans between these two engines. The first one has a 6 quart pan and the second has an 8-10 quart pan. There might be your answer as to which you have:

That's strange man. It seems like you have the 6 quart pan. This is strange. Have you asked the guys over at 6066gmcguy.org?

They will probably know what the correct length of the dipstick should be.

Anyone else with info on the dip stick length?


My son and I got her running today! Filled the bowl with gas, stuck a battery in it, and turned the key, and it fired up. Runs smooth, and strong. Sounds good, you can't really hear it in the video, but it sounds GOOD!!!

The drive line going to the transfer case was clanking. It would kind of shudder, then clank. I think the u-joints are just dry.

I got some answers about the oil quantity.

Over on Jolly's site, I asked them. They gave me measurements for the pan, the dipstick length overall, how far the dipstick "cap" is from the end, and finally, how far the dipstick tube sticks up out of the block. Everything matched except the height of the tube. The 305A with the 6 quart pan should be at 14", and mine is at 16", so therein lies the problem.

Next question is, what would be the best way to get the tube out without damaging it? It is rock solid in there, with the top clamp removed. I tried tapping it in further, tried jiggling it side to side, and tried twisting it. No movement at all.

Any suggestions?

Either that mentioned above or soaking some PB blaster on it. Before you go destroying it though, make sure you can find the correct one you need. It may be hard to get one. Just a thought. Or, get a tube cutter and cut down the tube to the size you need. kind of ghetto, but will get you by until you can procure the correct tube.

Thanks guys!!

I figured I would try to mess with it some more this weekend. If I can't get it to at least wiggle, I had thought about cutting it off to the right length, but didn't want to say that on here yet. Didn't want to get attacked for mentioning it, because I know that is not the proper way, but it is better than not knowing how much oil I have, or overfilling it.
