How do i track my trucks vin #
I would like to figure out what state and where my truck was originally used back in the day and where else it might have been sold too. Is there a way i can do this with the VIN number if so how? I really think it would be interesting.

With the privacy act and law probably not. The offices you need to contact for the info are under pretty strict rules as to who and why they can give out personal info.
You might be able to find out what dealership the truck was shipped to by the factory when it was built if there is a source to go through at GM. The Pontiac guys were able to get info on their 60's era cars through a couple of sources but I'm not sure Chevrolet has such a source. |

Heck in Idaho the DMV sells the registration lists, big stink a few years ago but they still do it. Do not know if it shows what you own or if it is just the names and addresses.

No way to do it. Just like mr48chev said; privacy laws.
My brother-in-law has tried for years to find the 67 Nova he had years ago. Even hired a Private Investigator. No luck. Records are sealed nationwide. Check the story about Papa Johns founder's search for his Camaro.... http://jalopnik.com/5344739/how-jalo...ith-his-camaro He paid $250k reward for anyone who could find it. So.... I'm pretty sure if there was a easy way he wouldn't have to do that.

Re: How do i track my trucks vin #
Guys used to get a cop buddy run the vin or plates and find out who owned a car but they get in the doghouse for misusing or handing out that info now. About the only thing that the policemen that I know will do on that line is to run a vin to see if it comes up on the stolen car listing.
But you don't want some clown calling you at home asking about some truck you owned or showing up on your doorstep wanting to see the truck his "grandpa" owned 50 years ago because he tracked you down. At least I don't. |

Re: How do i track my trucks vin #
Another problem is that our truck registrations originated under a paper system. When all the DMVs went to computers (mostly in the '80s and 90s) they didn't go back very far in computerizing old records. In the mid 90s Ohio would help you trace, but only went back 5 years. I'm sure most of the info we would need has been destroyed, or has so much dust on it you'd need a mask to get near it.

Re: How do i track my trucks vin #
I just contacted my DVS in MN... they would have helped but they only maintain records for 7 years.
According to these guys it can be done, and they have done it. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/189.cfm Last edited by Rednek13x; 04-03-2012 at 04:29 PM. |
