Metal above windshield repair help

My main goal is to get my cab to stop leaking when it rains. And to seal it off as best i can.. My biggest problem is on the inside above the windshield, as you can see in the picture it is pretty rusted out, although it does not leak there i would like to patch this up.

I would like to know how others have done this, what the best way to do this is. My truck is not a show truck, i am just repairing it to make everything solid again. I need help on this one.

That's about what the 56 GMC that was in my yard for a couple of years looked like. Off hand I don't know of anyone who makes patch panels for that section although someone should as too many of them rust in that area.
I think you are going to find that you will have to cut the bad metal out and form new pieces to replace it.

Do you think removing the windshield is a must?

My 59 is also very rusted in this area. I cut the roof off of a 58. I will cut the front portion of it off to use.

Thats a possibility for what i may do, going to a local bone yard Tuesday and will see if they have a cab thats good.

If its rusted through there its rust almost through all along that edge and around the sides on the roof skin and the eye brow of the roof skin. Replacing the roof with another 58 roof is a roll of the dice at best and a lot of work for what may be mediocre results.

If you cost out buying a roof skin and inner panel vs removing 2 roofs and panels, then cleaning up the second and making it usable, I think it gets you the same cost overall and a much better result with a new one.

i will have to cut the inner panel out to see how the outer one is. From the outside the eye brow and everything looks solid.. who knows. I am a rookie at metal fabrication, and a little hesitant doing something this big as in replacing the entire roof. But i am getting the hang of it and what i have done is turning out good.

Just remember, this is not a show truck. I just want to repair whats not good and drive it.

Remove the windshield.

That is a must, if the metal is gone that bad then the windshield gasket is well in need of replacing.
