Windshield with S S Trim Install

Hello,

I tried a thread for the installation of the Windshield with stainless steel trim on '47-53 Chevy Truck, but found nothing.
I thought about opening this new thread so that it may be helpful to other members, but at this time to me.

I am having great difficulty installing this Windshield and I ask some expert help.


I add some pictures to illustrate the current situation on my '53 Chevy truck.

I followed the instructions in this way:

Step 1: I installed the glass in the rubber
step 2: I installed the Stainless Steel Trim in the rubber
step 3: I put a wire on the inside of the rubber to pull from the inside
step 4: I put the silicon spray on the rubber and on the cab

The gasket not settles well, it seems as if the glass are too big but I measure it with the old ones and are equal.

Hi Caribean,

this is not a difficult job..... if everything goes smoothly but if you find a difficulty as in my case then it gets serious

I assembled and disassembled the glass 10 times and still have not finished.
Without losing his patience, calmly, I think I understand that the problem lies somewhere in between.

I think it's necessary to cut the two glass of 2 mm.....I think it's necessary to cut the two panes of glass 2 mm ....
...why do not fit perfectly on the center beam.

Guys, Frank's truck will probably be the nicest AD truck in Europe when he is done and this has really been a hold up in his progress. He could really use some solid info on how to cure this.

Have you tried installing old glass with new rubber? Was old glass fitting well before you took it out? This will tell you if the new glass is the problem.

That said, I don't think they cut that glass, I think they run it on a belt sander.

I noticed in your original pics it had the plain rubbers, are you trying to add the SS ones to your rebuild? If so, maybe there are some year differances in the molding. It looks like the lower corners did not seat all the way, in other words they did not go all the way into the opening. Did the fit tight one of the first times you tried it with out the SS? The center divider may also be wider with the not SS ones, so maybe it needs a different divider for the SS ones.

my truck was the first rubber without S S trim.
The old glass have the same sizes of new glass....that's why I do not understand where the problem.

There's a guy on the HAMB, he lives in Scotland, owns and AD and he owns/works as an automotive glass installer. His name is "50scotbolt", do a search and look him up. First link is a general one to the AD forum and the second is a link to a discussion regarding windshield installation.

Like previously stated make sure your new glass is not bigger than the original also when I did one for a friend we were using a gasket from one of the truck parts distributors and it wouldn't work so he finally purchased one from Steele rubber products and was 100 % better fit and went in like a charm. Oh and by the way try doing a windshield install on a 60 Chevy truck with the trim and then you'll see what problems really are also came up with the same solution of using Steele rubber products.

Just remember that all gaskets are NOT created equal.

Threw my first new away and ordered a steel rubber windshield gasket and yes there was a great difference in the hardness of the rubber of the old one and it fits better
