Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
Dad and I picked up ANOTHER truck today...70 Longhorn w/ a decent running 396/ TH400 77k miles. The engine has a leaky rear main seal, but otherwise appears solid. Plans are to pull the cab front sheetmetal and engine and swap it onto a swb stepside chassis I have along with a 700r4 trans. I have a set of vintage M/T cast aluminum valve covers and an Edelbrock Performer intake. This, along with a Comp "Thumper" cam, possibly headers and some Flowmaster 5 series should make it healthy. This Longhorn has one of the most solid rust free cabs I have seen in a long time. The hood grill and bumper are toast, but I have all the pieces off a 72. The doors are solid but have speaker cut outs . Both fenders and radiator support are pretty nice as well.

Re: Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
Passenger door panel is PERFECT, DS has one tear. Doors are almost PERFECT! Truck was equipped with a propane set up. We gave the seller his asking prrice of $1250 and he threw the propane "carb" and regulator in, along with a 72 1/2 ton rear axle and leaf springs. It was nice to be able to DRIVE a truck onto the trailer for a change. The story is the p.o. that the seller bought the truck from mounted a 60's gas tank in the truck along with an electric fuel pump IN THE CAB with about 15 ft of rubber hose and drove the truck here from California a year and a half ago... all that is GOING in the parts pile as I have a good 71 fuel tank destined for the truck, or a rear tank from an 82 suburban if it will fit.
By the way, the seller is a member here, I believe he said his handle it "70Chevytruck". His name is James and is a really nice guy. Thanks James for leting me use your air compressor to air up my trailer tires! I was in a hurry and forgot before I left the house. Last edited by WIDESIDE72; 09-11-2013 at 06:15 PM. |

Whats wrong with fixing it up as is? Looks like a nice truck with usable factory options.

I am picking up a swb 69 6 lug drum brake frame w/ unknown rear axle ratio and stepside bed next week. I plan to blast and paint the frame and set the 396 engine and a 700r4 trans I have in it. Then install then later install the cab and front sheet metal from this truck. Somewhere in there I will install the 72 disc brakes and 5 lug 3:73 axle I have. |

Re: Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
I had planned on going to the Pate swap meet this weekend, but my little girl and wife have both been sick this past week and I didn't want to leave them after being at the New Braunfels swap meet all last Friday and Saturday, so I gave my dad and brother my "shopping list". Dad picked up the 69 swb frame and stepside bed that I bought from Mighty Mouse. I sniped some photos of the frame from when Lynnfield had it for sale.

Dad brought the rolling chassis by today as he didn't want to unload and reload it. We have decided to sell the six lug wheels and tires in case anyone is interested. The tires on back are 275 60 r 15. Around half tread, maybe more ,all worn evenly, no dry rot or weather cracking. I would say the rear wheels are 15 x 10 and the fronts are 15 x 8. $200 for the set of four. SOLD

Re: Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
I finally got around to pulling the old hood, grill and bumper. I stuck the new hood on to keep the rain (!) out. I plan to build this as a 71 since I already have a nice OEM 71 grill surround and inner grill I had from my brother's 72 Cheyenne. I already bought a used 71/72 front bumper and brackets from teeitup, along with a set of rear sport brackets for the stepside and gravel guards. I will wait til the truck is on the SWB chassis before mounting bumpers.

Re: Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
The previous owner wanted the wheels, tires and rear bumper so after I pulled the front pieces I pulled them and set the truck on stands and locks. He is bringing his old ones tomorrow so that I can still move the truck til I do the body swap. You gotta love having a place in the country! My neighbors in town have no idea about my "hobby".

I added some blocks under the truck in front under the firewall (not shown in first photo) before getting under it!

The truck runs REALLY good (77k miles), and the radio works. You would think I was in high school still!

I bolted the inner into the used surround I have and just sat the whole thing in the truck to get an idea of how it will look. I still have to drill the rivets off the trashed 71 brackets I have and pop rivet them onto the good 71 surround. I also plan to weld up the holes from the 69/ 70 hood emblem I removed.

Here are a couple of photos of my 14 m.o. daughter Sophia giving me a hand. She liked getting her hands dirty! Momma was not as happy...

Re: Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
While on the quest to locate patch pieces to fix the 67 bed, I lucked into a kid who tore apart a complete 68 lwb step1/2 ton then lost interest. I scored the bed minus gate with nice fenders and front panel, 68 front fenders (nice DS, ps has attempt at patch on cup, decent radiator support not rotted out but not sure if it is 67-68 or 69-72 yet, as well as a 67/68 painted front bumper. Photos to follow soon. The 67 rear fenders will be removed and posted for sale soon.

Re: Picked up a 70 Longhorn w/ a 396/ TH400 and a NICE rust free cab!
Call me crazy, but I just came to the realization that I have more fun looking for parts, scrounging, accumulating, making what I have work and getting trucks going in "driver" condition than I do driving restored trucks! Dad has a 71 GMC SWB step we did a frame off on a few yrs back (for sale as well) that we hardly drive. He now has a 72 Chevy SWB step almost done with paint. I bought it with no drivetrain, pulled the front clip for better parts, scrounged stuff to get it going (see my other threads) and he took it all apart to paint, and I am actually kind of dreading having to put it back together!
