Tool for crank pulley removal?

Hey guys,

I need to swap crank pulleys to add a groove for AC compressor. What's the best tool for the job?

Here's a few examples:

This is for the balancer, which I don't want to remove if I don't have to, but I guess it would get the job done:

x2, if you're just removing the pulley.

If you need to pull the harmonic balancer, I have only used a puller similar to the one in the second link you posted.

Yes, the pulleys should come right off after removing the bolts, maybe a little tap from a hammer. I was thinking harmonic balancer when I said steering wheel puller

Even for the 250/292 engines that have a balancer with the belt grooves built into the outer ring it is better to just add a pulley on the front of the balancer hub. In the event the balancer fails, the extra pulley will trap the balancer ring from flying off and damaging anything such as the radiator. Paint the timing mark on the balancer and extend the paint line out onto the new pulley. At a later date if the balancer ring starts slipping a quick look at the misaligned paint marks will tell you what is going on.

Sounds like I may not need a puller at all. I thought the pulley was pressed onto the crankshaft. Is it just not that tight a fit?

Nother question--related. When I try to lossen the pulley bolts the crank/harmonic equalizer turns, cant get enough leverage to break the bolts free. How best to overcome that?

Put a belt back on. If two sections of the belt run close enough to each other, grab and squeeze with one hand. Or, stick a wood stick or hammer handle between a pulley and the belt. As you turn the pulley bolts the stick will wedge tight and prevent everything from turning.
With pulley off, replace pulley bolts with longer bolts. Stick long screw driver or tire iron/wrench across new bolts and remove crank bolt.

if u have a helper handy, have him hold a screwdriver tip into a flywheel or flexplate tooth and brace against block. Then you loosen the bolts up front.

The last time I had a similar issue I pulled a plug and put a bit of fuel line in the hole.

I put the ratchet on the bolt and hit the ratchet hard and fast with the palm of my hand and they always break free.. or an impact gun if you have one..

Once you pull that crank bolt and washer, just take a small rubber mallet and tap it, it should fall right off or pry it off with a large screw driver.
