Aluminum fuel tanks
Getting ready to buy an aluminum fuel tank for the 68 I'm building - has anyone had problems with the mounts cracking?

I'm in for this. Been thinking about the same. I have talked to a knowledgeable race car fabricator and he says aluminum is prone to crack. His thought - " spend the extra money for stainless" ($$$$). I'll wait a see what others say.

I was wondering the same thing about the cracking. I would also like to see how the are mounted. Pictures pictures pictures PLEASE!!!

Most installs involve drilling through the mounting flange and frame, then bolting it in from below. A 20 gal tank probably weighs in the 200-225 lb range when full, so it's not an immense weight - but with vibration, bouncing, and twisting I can see how cracking can occur.
I'm looking at ways to rubber mount the tank to the frame. I think some rubber bushings would do the trick, but I wonder if it would make any difference. Any experience / input is appreciated. |

I don't have pictures, but a PDF file of my design from Solidworks. It's fairly large (30 gal.), but I plan on pullling a small travel trailer and going in that direction. Roughly 12" x 12" x 48". I will also modify the angle mounts to bolt thru to the bed crossmembers. Low enough to go under a tonneau cover. "Out of sight, out of mind".
