factory radio upgrade
Anyone put a newer GM 1.5DIN radio in one of our trucks? My 1990 was factory equipped with a din and a half radio, and it's pretty shot. I'm thinking of upgrading to a newer style GM radio and wondering if anyone has any input.

Re: factory radio upgrade
pontiac had a halfway decent 1.5 din monsoon cd deck with a 7 band eq. I put one in an older ponitac a while ago to keep a stock apearance. pioneer and alpine make 1.5 din units as well so thats another option.

Did that radio have the amp built in, or was the amp a separate unit? I'm more familiar with Ford Premium Sound set ups and they ran a separate amp. |

Re: factory radio upgrade
This one had the amp built in and it made some decent power. Came from a mid-late 90s trans am if I remember correctly. I ran memphis 6.5s and 6x9s with it and it had no problems. This was in a girlfriends car after the flashy stereo got stolen so I was going for a stock appearance with better sound quality.

Re: factory radio upgrade
No, you don't see. I want to put in a newer GM 1.5 DIN radio where my older GM 1.5 DIN radio currently resides. I'm not looking to hack in a double DIN where a shaft style radio once resided. While i may be an asshole who owns a sawzall, I don't want my dash to announce that to everyone. |

Perhaps you should find someplace else to be an asshole. Motornut was only trying to help. I doubt any of us are here for grammar lessons

Re: factory radio upgrade
GM did offer a fairly nice radio that would fit your current opening and bezel. It might not be as nice as the one you linked to, but I'd consider it a close second and should be fairly easy to find on car-part.com.
They had several flavors of the 1.5 size. Most common had just the treble and bass but the nicer ones had a 5 band equalizer built in.

Re: factory radio upgrade
does anybody have some install pictures of putting a 1.5 din in the 1990 1.5 din slot?
I am looking to do the same but want a CD player and not a tape deck. Thanks |

Re: factory radio upgrade
On those 80's radios, a lot of the brackets are interchangable. Find a radio that you like, and transfer your brackets. Back in te day, you had to reuse the radio brackets usually anyhow.

Stew-
There is no reason to have that attitude around here. Maybe he misread your thread but that's all, it doesn't mean anyone is stupid. Hopefully the mods will come in here and do what's necessary. Posted via Mobile Device
