International standard ISO 7736 defines a standard size for car audio head units. The standard was originally established by the German standards body Deutsches Institut für Normung as DIN 75490, and is therefore commonly referred to as the "DIN car radio size". It was adopted as an international standard in 1984.

Head units generally come in either single DIN (180 x 50 mm panel) or double DIN (180 x 100 mm panel) size. The depth is not standardized; as a result, some cars such as the Opel Manta / Ascona have the correct sized front aperture but will accommodate few DIN sized radios other than the original due to the shallow depth; this despite the vehicle being manufactured as late as 1988. The US standard for a DIN radio is 2" x 7" and the Double DIN sized radio is a 4" x 7". Some radios in Japanese Kei cars do not conform to the DIN standard however.

GM and Chrysler radios measuring 3x7 are commonly referred to as 1.5 DIN or DIN and a half.

Got this handled today. Picked up an adapter plug and antenna adapter from replacementradios.com $25 well spent. Plug it into the back of the new radio, plug the factory wiring into the other end and your done. Stole the old radio my buddy took out of his '99 Silverado, AM/FM/Cassette with the aux in for a remote CD.

I don't know how the bracketry attaches to these newer style radios and couldn't see a whole lot of spots where the factory would attach it. Anywho... Pulled my factory radio out, it is held in by one L-bracket on the right, one on the bottom, and a long brace that goes from the the back of the radio to the bottom of the dash. Kinda took the new radio apart to gain access to drill some holes. Took the clip in studs out of the original radio and took the clips off the studs and put them onto the newer radio. The whole right side of the newer radio is a heat sink so I took part of the old radio chassis and made a bracket to affix a stud to the right side. These pictures show what I did to make the new radio sit right at home like it was born there.




Upon putting it in the hole I had to do some grinding on the right side stud to get it through the notch in the dash. It's a snug fit, but it goes in the factory hole. Had to adjust the rear brace and drill a new hole to attach that to the bottom of the dash (I actually enlarged one of the 37 random screw holes in my dash.)




It fits behind the trim just like the original one and looks great. This radio makes a lot more power the the original the truck cranks pretty good with some 6x9's in the cab corners with the brackets that what's-his-name here sells!

I know Bob is kidding about the theft part, but did that style radio have the anti theft stuff in it? I know we run in to it daily just unhooking batteries in cars, it will kick the anti theft crap. Wondering if you had to do any work around or disable anything etc.
Now that you know what fits and you have the plugs, are you going to look/keep your eyes open for a CD player optioned radio?

I just used my sawzall and hacked all that theft lock junk out! LOL! I don't know what the deal with the Theft Lock is, this radio has it, but it wasn't an issue. Actually, when I plugged it in it still had all my friends presets in it still. I did a little looking into Theft Lock when researching if and how feasible this project was, and found most of these radios use the first and last three digits of the VIN for the unlock code. And since I got the radio from a friend that info was a text away if I needed it. And for the record, I ain't stole it. There are also some videos on Youtube on how to unlock Theft Locked radios.


As far as upgrading to a CD model, I'm not sure. I shoulda wrote down all the numbers off this one before installing it. They make a iPod adapter that plugs right into the factory auxiliary input on the radio, but supposedly those only work on radios that came in a vehicle equipped with a factory CD changer. I believe that adapter gives you the ablility to control the iPod through the radio, too. The truck this radio came with had a remote single CD player in the dash. I don't really want to upgrade to a CD model since I never listen to CDs really, but I do want to have a simple iPod hook up.
