I have found this to be the easiest way to set a distributor. For me anyway.

Pull the #1 plug (plug closest to the radiator on the drivers side) and bring the piston to top dead center on the compression stroke. Drop the distributor in so that when it's seated, the contact on the rotor is facing the #1 plug hole. When you set the cap on, the #1 plug wire will go where the rotor makes contact.

That's it, you should be close enough and will just need to adjust the timing by retarding or advancing the distributor. If it won't time where you dropped it in, you may need to pull the distributor back out and move it forward or backwards by 1 tooth.

Works evertime for me...........
