rear end question

building a 50 chevy and looking for a rear end. the truck i have did not have the original rear. I found a 95 caprice rear end on craigslist 12 bolt with disk brakes. i have to go see it still but the guy says the length between the inner rotors is right around 60". and ideas or suggestions for me. thanks, Jake

I used a truck 12 bolt out of an early chevy truck. If you are sticking with the stock ride height it works great. It would be a little wide if you lowered the truck a bunch. The Caprice axle sounds like it would be a little wide, probably around 64 inches at the wheel mounting surface. 70's nova rears fit perfect if your are going low.

A 1996 CAPRICE WONT HAVE A 12 BOLT it will be a 10 bolt 8.5

A 55/64 Chevy car rear axle fits pretty well but on 58/64 you have to cut all the brackets off.

The 68/70 something Nova rear ends are the most popular but you have to run reverse offset wheels or the rear tires won't clear the bed sides. That is what I have under my 48 and I had to carry a chrome reverse spare to be able to put a spare on the truck.

I ran a 65/66 12 bolt posi under the 48 for a lot of miles including a trip to Texas and a trip to Ogden Utah and tire clearance is good but again it's a lot of cutting and trimming and those rear ends are getting hard to find.

You need to measure mounting flange to mounting flange where the wheels mount to get it right on these rather than to the back side of the rotors or backing plates.

thanks for the help, still measuring. I looked at the 95 caprice rear end and its a 12 bolt available on the cop cars

I am not sure what engine your running but usually vehicles from the 90's are going to have real high gears because of the overdrive transmissions/fuel economy demands... even if it fits you may not have squat for acceleration...

its a LS1 so no issues there
