Is it worth it???

Local guy has this base model SWB Chevy for sale and I was wondering if its worth close to what he's asking. Its a 250 6 cyl. Factory ordered with power steering & brakes & granny 4 spd. Owner says it only has 35k original miles on it. Has been stripped down to bare metal and repainted the factory cardinal red. All original red interior. New 18" Boss 338s. He's asking $8500. Let me know what u guys think.

Thats a very nice looking truck. If you feel the paint is well done and not covering any shady bodywork, thats not a bad price. Not cheap, but neither is a premium quality paint job. I would try for 7k and see where it goes.

Not really my thing. But when I thought I was getting a truck with an inline 6 I looked into them. There are some pretty bad 6's out there.

The first question is rust. Did you physically crawl under the truck and check the undercarriage, especially the normal trouble spots (cab corners, wheel wells, floor boards at kick panels, etc.)?
A truly pristine truck is very rare. However, if you want a rust free clean truck to drive you can do better by buying one in the southwest and having it shipped to you. $8,500 will buy a much more modern truck with more modern features and be a better driver. If you just have to have a square then you should check all over for squares - especially SW. Check Phoenix, Albuquerque, Tucson craigslist, etc.
$8500 is waaay too much.

We had a 6cyl granny gear pickup just like that at work for a push truck. Same red color, same seat, everything. It couldn't get out of it's own way but man it was a blast to drive and would pull or push anything! It would be a blast to drive, but $8500? Seems a little steep for a work truck with 18s.

Check stuff out good, like brake hoses pads and shoes, bushings, body and engine gaskets, suspension parts, u joints, etc. I know it's low miles, but that probably means it was low maintenance too. Those parts all go bad just sitting there, especially for 35 years. Tires are worth a peek too, 18" tires are not cheap and if they're some used takeoffs that will need replacing in 6 months or you find 4 ball joints that are sloppy and motor mounts that are mushy from leaking oil you've got some good points to negotiate.

That's a good point too. Nobody painted that just for fun. Was it stored outdoors and the paint was just rough and badly faded? Or was it a Minnesota or Wisconsin truck in a former life and has new sheet metal at best and a muddy patch panel mess at worst?

It's probably worth it if there is no serious rust and it is in good shape.

Would i pay 8500 for it? No because you can find equivalent trucks in same or better shape for less.

You can't buy much for 3k any more and a nice set of wheels and tires will consume most of the 2k . I think that if the truck is nice then the truck is worth somewhere between 7k and his asking price. 5k for a nice quality truck is not very practical any longer.

I do have one observation. The driver door looks to be a different shade of red. Is it in person oris it a camera angle thing? It looks that way in two different pics.

The truck shown above appears to have escaped that fate. If it is low mileage and the original panels then it's far above average. The new paint , wheels ,tires etc add to it. That is what sets it apart from those trucks that have been used and abused and that always adds value. You are right about the different areas affecting price. Rust free areas tend to reduce the local prices.

Fresh paint scares me some will use it to hide shotty body work and rust repairs.If you want a truck to just to drive and that one has no hidden problems it should be ok.If your looking for a truck to make your own maybe airbag i would find something cheaper.

Where the h... are you guys getting $8500 for a used truck??? My wife would KILL me!!! Maybe a secret stash and then lie about how much you really paid? For me to pay that much it would have to have documents for the rebuilt engine and trans and rear end and it better not be a 6. Oh and it would be able to pull the Airstream that is included!! Man I'm CHEAP!

I dont think boss 338's fall into the category of a nice set of wheels. they are about 700 bucks for all 4 and already played out in the c10 scene. a truck like that would go for 5-6k here in az.

You guys that are throwing the cheap prices out there are not taking in all the facts. Yes, you can buy a original truck for less. If it has really nice paint, it will not sell for much less. If it has been properly repainted it will not sell for much less.

The killer for most of us on this truck is the 6 cylinder and the granny 4 speed. If you plan to keep it, thats fine. If your going to replace that combo then you need to factor that in.

If it's a good quality paintjob and the bodywork is good I would probably feel comfortable paying it although I would definitely try to talk them down. I don't know your intentions but if you don't intend to keep a stock V8 in it then it doesn't really matter that it's an I6 instead of a V8.

You also have to consider if that truck is worth $5-6k in dry states where they're more common in that condition it's easily worth at least $1k more in the rust belt. Figure $500-1000 for shipping to get a truck from AZ, OK, TX etc., the hassle of dealing with shipping, the risk of damage from shipment, and the lack of getting to see/inspect the truck in person. If you do drive/fly to inspect a truck in person then you have to consider travel cost, if you're driving/trailering it back, and how much your time is worth.

While I do like the idea of building your own vs buying someone else's, I'm not sure it would work out the same. I think a better formula is buy a decent truck for $3k and put $5k into it and be proud of the work you did!

Don't forget though about the unkowns when doing your own vs buying one. Things like marriage and or kids or some other health that can turn your $3000 clean original into a $500 pile of parts in two storage units on the other side of town that hasn't been touched in 3 years. I can totally apreciate why someone would buy one that is mostly done.

As stated above, just because this truck looks nice does not mean that all mechanical/electrical parts are perfect. Even well maintained trucks break - tires, brakes, shocks, electrical connections, HVAC, etc., etc. Unless every wear part has been recently replaced - it will have to be replaced - probably sooner rather than later, so more $$$ will be required. $8500 invested toward a new or much newer truck will give you more benefit if you plan to keep your truck for 10+ years. Some people buy old vehicles that never need repairs, but I have never had that experience.
