Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

I am considering something like Dynamat for my GMC before I put the carpet in. Is it a wise thing to do? Worth the $$? I'm just looking for a quiet and tight cab and of course heat from the floor pans, etc.

My new carpet has the jute padding on it. Is that enough, or would it be too much with Dynamat? Is there a more cost effective brand to buy? Dynamat seems like the high end but it's pricey.

Thanks...

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

I got this idea from our Forum; $19 a roll from Lowe's. I used about 2 1/2 rolls I think. My carpet had the jute padding underneath as well and came out fine. Some people have mentioned a subsequent tar odor, but I've yet to notice it. I'm ona budget too.

Don't buy anything until you check out this link:

http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi

I have looked for hours at different types and from what I have read FatMat (which is significantly cheaper than Dynamat but the same concept) stinks (literally as in the olfactory sense). After a thousand reviews and different sites visited I am going to go sound deadener showdown all the way. Just check it out and let us know what you think

Fatmat is a much cheaper option than dynamat. One roll did most of my cab.

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

I am putting in the FatMat product, dont know how well it works yet but my carpet will also have the jute back. I will have a good comparison once I have mine finished because my brothers truck does not have any sound deadener.
most stereo shops are installing dynamat or fatmat just for the quieting properties

I'm guessing it's 'Gold' on the SPID? My GMC is the same color. Those door panels are near impossible to find.

Do you happen to know if the 'Sandalwood' color is the same or possibly close to the same color? Classic Industries sells what looks like the same color but they call it Sandalwood. I thought you might know (?)

I will probably buy the seat cover in Sandalwood and just send it back if I don't like it .. (kinda hijacked my own thread ! )

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

Years ago, when I spent a lot of time wheeling my blazer, the heat would just about ruin the fun. We spent so much time barely moving, that all the heat from the engine, trans, transfer case, exhaust, etc., turned the interior into an oven. One day at Menards, I saw some insulation that was basically bubble wrap, with foil on each side. It was like $40 for a roll. I figured as cheap as it was, I had nothing to lose. There was enough to cover the entire floor of my blazer, and then double up over the trans tunnel, and exhaust areas. I'm SURE it's not as good as some higher dollar, more dedicated products, but it made a WORLD of difference! If you're really bucks down, it might be something to consider. This time around, I am going to try the Fatmat, after doing a lot of research on the subject. I have used the "bubble wrap" on several vehicles since then, and have always been happy with the results.

Here's the spid; I was about to say that it was Parchment, but that's not reflected on the spid. Hmnn?

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

I used Fatmat due to the cheaper price, not finished yet. I have got this far with one roll and still plenty leftover to do the rest as you can see. Used the 80ml rattletrap.

I did my whole inside cab of my '95, (doors and all) with Stinger Roadkill and I have no complaints. Not sure what it compares price wise with everything else.

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

About how thick is the stuff? Is it going to make the carpet feel fluffy?

Looking at the product Eastwood makes, .. is it any good? I need to order some more stuff anyway and thought I'd just do one big order.

Did you get your carpeting from Stock Interiors? It looks great. I just received carpet from SI yesterday. It took it out of the box to look at it, but haven't had a chance to install it.

Any issues?

Fatmat here, used it on the 67 c10 and the 68 442, easy to apply, no smell, and works great in quieting down my cab.

The steering wheel is from a GMC Safari van; 15" diameter.

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

CCRat, put a strip or two of whatever you get on the insde of the doors. It will be worht taking off the panels, that stuff needs lubing up any way does'nt it? The stuff from the home store I hear great thing about it as a sound deadner and some stuff I think called brown bread. It will make your doors close a sound like a late model truck ,so quiet and if your truck has a headliner [sorry did'nt look] put a couple of strips under it as well HUGE difference!!

Re: Sound Deadner question - Dynamat, Fatmat, etc

I used Hushmat (black). Made in the U.S.A.

"HushMat material technology was introduced to North American automobile manufacturers in 1988, the foil-constrained layer damping technology being approved by General Motors Corporation and began in vehicle production the following year. HushMat materials are now specified and used by every automobile manufacturer in the United States, Canada and Mexico. These same materials are now available to you."
