cam and lifter questions

Ive been having issues with my enigne not running good almost like someone pulled 4 wires off I cant figure it out I've been through the basic timing and carb tuning So I pulled the engine I know drastic but I had to or I just wanted to look busy. Im not sure if I installed a solid cam or a hyd cam I know I have hdy lifters. Will that make a big difference? should go with buying a cam that I know is a hyd cam? any suggestions

Re: cam and lifter questions

First off did you buy this cam as a kit, cam and lifters, yea pulling the engine was a little extreme, you should have pulled plugs one at a time and look at color first, black being rich, ash white to a hazy silver being way to lean, are they new plug wires, dizzy worn out, is this a new build, was the cam break in done correct, we need a little more info here....

How does everything look as far as wear?

Since you have her apart you can go ahead and get a cam and lifter kit if it's in your budget.
Is it small block Chevy?

Re: cam and lifter questions

Sounds like a carb problem, at least figure out if its flooding or why its running rich. And put in a new set of plugs. I dont know the details on your engine but im guessing its pretty much stock? In most cases on a stock engine you should probably never "feel" the secondaries come in. If you do and you have a vacuum secondary Holley then you need to change the secondary spring to a stiffer one.

Re: cam and lifter questions

before I tore the engine apart the truck sounded and ran ok then one day it just went down hill it would idle I could'nt get it timed nothing would help. the only real issu was not kicking in when i stepped on it it would just bogg down. I did try the stiffer spring but to no avail I installed a gas gauge but it ran so bad it didnt matter. so I got impatient and took her out only to find out the engines ok spark plugs were black oil was black and new too? I even took the carb spacer out to see oh well shes going back in on wednesday

Re: cam and lifter questions

I'd recommend doing a compression test if you haven't already. Also what year /type of engine is it?

Re: cam and lifter questions

Just a thought but I have been caught before by simular simptoms, tried carburator, distributor and timing ect., Ended up being a power brake booster gone bad creating a major vacum leak. If you have power brakes check your booster and make sure it holds vacum. May not be your issue, just sounds simular to the one I was into, ran good one day and the next day no good.
