71-72 Smog?

Although I won't be putting any smog equipment back on any of my pickups I have always been curious as to why some pickups had smog and others didn't? Both my '71's and my '72 were built in Fremont. One of my '71's is from Susanville, Ca and the other two are from here in Montana. None of them had smog when I got them and unless the exhaust manifolds had been swapped none of them had the holes on them for the smog lines. Were they only put on for pickups destined to higher populated areas?

Also interested, and what equipment was included. My 72, built in Fremont and delivered to Chadbourne Chevrolet in Upland California, has/had a smog pump and air injection manifolds, evap canister.

Re: 71-72 Smog?

Check your vin plate. It will say if it was built with California emissions or if it is out of state. Mine was out of state and did not have "all" of the emissions but had evap canister.

Re: 71-72 Smog?

My 72 was built here in fremont and has no emission equipment...but it was a 3/4 ton truck. My 72 1/2 ton had equipment.

so did your 72 1/2 ton have something emissions related on your SPID?

My SPID has YF5, California Emissions. The build sheet, but not the SPID, also has YF5, as well as NB2 California Emission Control, and V39 Exhaust Emissions Label, and YF6 Cal Proc Option which is emissions related but my research has yielded conflicting descriptions of what this is.

As does my K20. It has the evap. canister but no pump or manifold fittings. I believe it was sold new as a California truck but am not 100% positive (I bought it in 1977 with black plates). I'm quite sure the GVWR also affected the smog requirements on California trucks, and most likely also for non-Calif. trucks -- for instance, half-tons may have come with smog equipment that was not required for 3/4 tons.

Re: 71-72 Smog?

hmm.. interesting replies. before today i had never heard of YF5,NB2, or V39. i've had two '72 Highlanders in the past, one from Canada and one built in Flint and from Colo. that had no smog but had charcoal canisters. in fact every C10/K10 I've had or seen has had the charcoal can. and I've never seen a C20/K20 with either.
