fuel gauge not reading with lights on

I had to pull my 72 tank out that had a hole in it. I replaced it with a 70 tank and sending unit. When I turn on the headlights the gas gauge drops to empty. I have checed the wire for crackes or grounding out some where. Any ideas????

Re: fuel gauge not reading with lights on

I had this problem with mine last weekend- it was a burned ground trace on the cluster circuit board.

Easy fix was to run a ground wire from the 1/4" ground lug screw on the gauge cluster to a convenient spot in the dash.

Pull the panel lights fuse out of the fuse panel and see if it still does the same thing.
