timings effect on heat?
i recently adjusted the timing on my truck, got it to the point where the mark is right at the beginning of the markings (unsure how many degrees that is) but it seems like the motor is hotter all the time unsure if the timing had anything to do with this, please help

retarded timing will make the motor run hotter yes.

So as you look at the mark on your damper the marks to the left of 0 are retarding & the marks to the right of 0 are advancing ,CORRECT?

the other way, it would need to go left (counter clockwise/passenger side) to advance. it would most likely say sometihng like 12 10 8 6 4 2 0

Each line is 2 degrees. Btdc to the left. Did you remove the hose to your vacuum pot on your distributor and plug ir before you set your timing?

How big is your air cleaner? A small air cleaner can make it run hot too. A stock engine should have at least a 4" air filter.

i have the stock air cleaner, the whole thing is stock, i forgot to unplug the vacuum advance on the dist. what mark should i be at? the motor is dirty so i couldnt read/see any markings except the pointing parts on the timing marks

What year is the motor? It's summer time too! It will run very hot with today's temps. I would run a 180 thermostat in hot climate states during the summer. I would change back to 190 when fall/winter arrived. Try adding a little water wetter in the coolant. You can but a bottle at parts stores. It works great!! Fix the timing first!! I like to run a stock engine at 4 degrees.

i think the motor is a 81 just like the truck, but im not sure, its a gm goodwrench that was installed just 30k ago, so which mark is 4 deg?
