WTB: Lower dipstick guide tube

Does anyone have a spare of the short dipstick tubes that go in the oilpan? Not the main tube but these are the 2" or so ones that press in the bottom of the block and guide the tube in the pan. You have to take the pan off to get at. If someone has one handy I would appreciate it.

Re: WTB: Lower dipstick guide tube

You can get these at any Chevy dealership for about $15. Part number 3951600. Installs from the top before the upper tube is installed. If your local dealer does not want to get you one go to gmpartsdirect.com for $8 plus $13 shipping.

Re: WTB: Lower dipstick guide tube

That is correct. Most good dealerships still keep one of these on hand, or will at least order one for you.

You can also try looking up Summit Pn: NAL-3951600 / $12.95 for the OE GM piece. Mel

Re: WTB: Lower dipstick guide tube

Thanks guys, but I don't think that is what i need. I think mine is different since its a 4x4? My upper tube fits tightly in the block by itself so I think the part i need must have been pressed in from the bottom. It definitely isn't as long as the 3951600 part and i believe the 3951600 is a non press fit, correct? There was about an inch or less sticking out of the block (to the inside of pan) and nothing towards the outside when I dropped off bare block at the machine shop. If nothing else, I'll just make a tube on the lathe so it press fits from the bottom i guess. I have a parts 350 at the back of the shed I was thinking about digging out but its from a 2x4 so it may have the same long incorrect tube. Anyone seen a shorter tube that presses in and doesn't protrude to the outside of the block?

Re: WTB: Lower dipstick guide tube

I very well could be wrong but I believe that all GM V8 SB engines from the early 60s to at least the mid 90s (1st gen) used the same lower tube and they all slip in from the top, not an interference fit, it has a lip that keeps it from falling out. Maybe ask your machine shop? The upper tube is an interference fit and goes down far enough to hold the lower tube in place.

I looked again and you are indeed correct that is the tube I need! I see there is a lip down in the block about 3/4" inch that the flange on the end of tube hits against. Makes sense now to keep it from going in too far but allow the top tube to press into the block. My old one must have been rusted in or something since it didn't readily come out. The engine was locked up so that is very likely. You saved me some hassle and now this thing will be correct thank you guys, sometimes its the little things that we get tripped up on!
