drum to disk
Hey everybody. Could someone advise me on the parts required for converting the Dann 44 drum brakes on a '70 GMC K10 to disk? Would I be able to siply take the setup from a newer K10, or would it have to be from a 67-72 with disks? Thanks

It's an easy swap. I took the drum Dana 44 out of my 67 and bolted in a later model (77 or 78 I think) Disc Dana 44. Everthing should just bolt up. Using later model brake hoses also threaded directly to the original fitting at the frame. Let us know if you run into any problems that I'm not aware of.

Can you change the gears(say 3.07 to 3.73) in a D44? I know that you can't do this in the carriers in 12B, just never heard about a Dana.
Thanks, Matthew

It appears that the cut off for changing carriers is 3.73 and down and 3.92 and up.

I think you will need a disc type master cylinder and a disc proportioning valve to work correctly. I did on mine. Disc brakes use more fluid than drums.

I've got the proportioning valve and booster from a disk truck, but what I really need to know is if I can keep everything intact and just change the spindles and stuff from another D44 and if so which D44 or would I have to chang the whole thing out like pont mentioned.
As for the gear thing, you can get 4.10 gears to fit the 3.73 carrier from Motive. This comes in handy if you want to run bigger tires and keep that carrier Thanks for the help guys

I was looking in a reider racing catalog. They have the same thing you mention for dana 60 axles. I did not see anything like that for 44s not that that means anything.
