PCV on a 86 350 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I recently got a 1986 GMC 1/2 ton with a 350. All smog has been removed, along with the PCV.
Is the PCV required.
The port on the carb is plugged, and the valve cover has a breather stuck in the hole where the PCV used to be.

dont know where ya live but ya may not get past inspection without all that stuff. I know here in my area ya wont

i know here in Pheonix you wont get through emissions if you dont have your pcv valve hooked up to the carb. Just buy a new one with some hose and rehook it up

Also if you don't run one, you will have oil all over your valve covers unless the push it breather is REALLY tall.

A PCV aka positive crankcase valve is required for a health engine. This valve allows any internal pressures to be vented thru the carb. In many cases after removing the hoses and valve the engine will begin to leak oil at the front or rear crankshaft seals. The valve also provides some valve stem lube as the internal vapors are saturated with oil. Some oil vapor makes carbon on the vales also. The systed is designed to draw fresh outside air into a rocker cover vent. The air displaces the internal block air and is drawn into carb base and burned. It is desirable to have a slight vacumm in the block. Carb base bolts should be checked occasionally for tightness, as this is also a good place for poor a seal.
