Update on the piso
I went out and got a temp sensor, and O2 sensor, and a fuel filter this morning. I replaced the temp sensor and went to replace the O2 sensor when I realized I don't have one! I forgot it was located on the exhaust pipe, I guess when I had my exhaust done 6-7 years ago that got yanked. I can't do the fuel filter until later. I pulled the air cleaner off, got the truck started long enough to run around and look at the injectors. There is fuel getting to the TBI (so no sending unit, pump, or filter problems) and the spray pattern looks good. But once again (actually, 4 times again) the truck starts then dies. Any other suggestions would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

Ok, your getting somewhere now. You need to get that O2 sensor hooked up. Go to the auto store and in the HELP section you will find those spark plug anti-foullers. One of those will be them same threads as your O2 sensor (14mm or 18mm). Cut the end off so you just have the threaded part and get it welded into your pipe so you can get the O2 sensor back in there. Any time you make a change you should unhook the battery so the computer can relearn the new changes.

I'll try it, but I really need to get the truck running to get it to the shop to have welding done. I find it hard to beleive that the problem lies in something that was removed 7 years ago. Doesn't the computer go bad sometimes?

Greg,
it's real hard to diagnois problems with these TBI pieces of crap. I replaced everything on my van before I finally got it to run right. It's messing up again now. I think the EGR I put on it has went south. It was a replacement from Advance, the generic type. The van is skipping at idle and I can smell exhaust. Not raw fuel but like the kind you smell from the EGR. I think the EGR is staying open at idle. I'm going to stick the old one back on to check it. Yours could be anything and these parts are not cheap. So just replacing everything until it gets fixed is costly. I hate to say what is wrong with your truck. Maybe the IAC valve. Who knows. And yes, the computer do go bad.

Thanks for the bad news Mike!
All I have to say right now is, this sucks! Should I break down and just take it to a mechanic? Would they have better luck than us?

It sure sounds like the IAC (idle air control) valve, but it could be anything. But, even the cheap GP Sorensen ones from Advance are 30 bucks. I can send you my old one that I'm sure doesn't have anything wrong with it just to check if you like. It would be on my dime.
On a brighter note, I sure hate to keep telling about my good fortune, but I went out a few minutes ago to swap out my EGR. Instead I found why my van was skipping. Are you ready for this? A vacuum hose was torn and had come off. Sorry Greg. Not rubbing it in. Just real glad my luck has changed for the better. I thought the only kind of luck I had left was all bad. Let me know on the IAC valve and I'll get it packed and send it to you in the morning. |
