What color where 1972 Texas Truck Plates?

First I lived the dream in 1972. Been there done that. In fact that's the year I graduated from high school. My high school colors were green and I thought it was pretty cool that the 1972 car plate that I put on my 68 Z/28 was green on a white back ground.

So, I recently purchased a 72 GMC Step, then purchased 72 Green/White plates on ebay and took them to my local Texas Tax Office to register the truck using these really nice plates. The nice lady behind the desk tells me I can't use them because the letters are suppose to be blue/white. So, now I'm thinking I'm brain dead and I just wasted some money on the green/white plates.

Now I come home, check ebay again and several other sites and all I see are green/white truck plates, trailer plates, Farm Truck plates, dealer plates etc.

So, does anyone have a website that I can go to that specifically describes the color of 1972 Texas plates that I can take back to the Tax office and plead my case?

Thanks,

Mine are white with green letters. I winder where they are getting their info from. Ask them to show you. 71's are white with black letters, 70's are white with blue and I believe 73 are white with red, so I wouldn't think they were lookin a the wrong year...

Wideside,

I was looking at the same Truck sheet she was. She wasn't making any of this up. The Passenger sheet was correct. Now I'm thinking whoever put the Truck sheet together moved the line up one year throwing the chart off.

I just went to ebay and printed off about 10 auctions with all types of 72 Texas plates and they are all Green/White. So, I'll go back down there tomorrow and plead my case.

Re: What color where 1972 Texas Truck Plates?

I've had good luck buying reproduction plates from licenseplates.tv (there's another place I won't name that is just terrible, plastic garbage and horrible service) for Washington state. But I went to look to see what color the 72 Texas ones were, and for whatever reason Texas is one of the only states I've seen where the site doesn't offer a reproduction.

Re: What color where 1972 Texas Truck Plates?

She's probably looking at the 1972 replacement plate colors (replacement plates were issued when the original was damaged, lost, or stolen). Let her know you are using original plates for the 1972 year - not replacement plates.

I had the same problem with my 1971 plates - original white/black. The replacement plates for 1971 were white/red.

I had to talk to two tag offices before I found one with someone who really knew & understood the classic/antique YOM plates.

Good luck!

DaddyO, that's exactly what was going on. I went back with about 10 examples of all types of 72 plates and she finally caught the replacement plate note. Funny thing is, this time she accepted the plates even though they were not "Truck" plates. All is well. Also found out I don't have to run a front plate if it's registered as an antique. I hate front plates.

El Campo - You are supposed to have 'truck' plates for a truck - Z10 got lucky.

I

I think you really are suppose to have "Truck" plates. I would be careful about "Farm Truck" plates.

The good news is unless you want to run a front plate, you'll only need one. A single plates are much less expensive than matched sets.

Re: What color where 1972 Texas Truck Plates?

Hmm you only have to have a rear plate? I thought that you had to have front and back unless you had the antigue plate. Did you register it as a Classic? Thanks! Not trying to jack the thread.

El Campo, when they handed me the Antique plate there was only one. When they finally approved my plates, I specifically asked if I need to run both 72 plates and was told no, only the back one.

Hope that helps.
