That is a broken water temp sending unit just like the previous poster said.

Those 68 chevy stepsides with the I6 must have been popular with the government. I've got a parts 68 that says Dept of Interior.

If it's not leaking it's not broke!

I'd say that one is broke. The complete electrical parts are broken off.

Re: What is this on my I6 250?

The bulb with sensing line is gone for sure. The thermowell is there. If it's not leaking it's not a problem. Could put a plug in it I suppose.

Re: What is this on my I6 250?

Yeah it's not leaking fluids. I just didn't know what it was for and wasn't sure if it might contribute to the engine not running right. Just a thermostat wouldn't affect that though.

Re: What is this on my I6 250?

It possibly might have been an emission control senser but most likely it was for a gauge or warning light. It would be a good idea to replce it with the corresponding sending unit. There should be a green wire around there that hooks to it.

Remember, this is a '68 truck. Emission control sensors hadn't been invented yet

Re: What is this on my I6 250?

68 was the first year they vented the crankcase to the air filter. I think thats all they had as far as emission control goes. Yes green wire should come around from the passenger side of the engine. It has kinda an interesting connector on it too.

Sorry for starting the gov truck tangent.

Re: What is this on my I6 250?

Yep. it WAS a sending unit. I have seen these boken off and a new one installed in the thermostat housing! Look for where the green wire is going to, make sure it is connected to a working sending unit. I love those 250 I6's.

Do we see the lines for the A.I.R smog set-up in your pic?

I don't know, it's never had a belt on it since I've had it.
