Towing Capacity?

Brought my boat home today (18' Ranger bass boat)
Used my 72 LWB with the hitch ball on the bumper.(8000 lbs. capacity)
It acted like a pig at times. Grunted and groaned and shooked and shimmied.
350/350.
What's the towing capacity for this truck (1/2 ton), and how do I improve it?
Just don't want the trailer to fall off or blow up the truck.
Thanks

What gears you have? If you have the 3.07 (most likely) then your truck is rated at 6500 pounds.
I would think twice about using a bumper to tow that much weight too. That kind of weight should be a class 3 hitch if I am not mistaken. Besides, this is one area where over kill is a GOOD idea. If you've ever lost a trailer, you'd know what I mean.

It should be able to tow the boat easy enough, I've got a 71 Cobalt 18' with mercruiser I/0 and the hull is supposed to weigh 1800#, figure another 1000 or so for the engine and outdrive, along with the tandem axle trailer. I pull it with my K-10 and it's got a weak 350 and 3.08 gears. I also pull it with my 90 K-5 Jimmy (350/700R4/3.42's) and don't have any trouble dragging it with either..........Note: I don't have stock hitches on either of them.

I agree that it should have no problems, but 6500 is what GM said it was safe for thoguh.
