Can you remove front crossmember with engine in place?

Was wanting to know if I could remove my front crossmember on my 69 c-10 1/2 2wd with the engine still in place. My motor mounts are bolted to the top of my frame rail and look like they are just resting on mu crossmember! Any advice with be appreciated.

You can. I would use a hoist to make sure the engine doesn't drop though.

The bottom of the engine perches should have a bolt securing them, they shouldn't be just resting. You COULD drop the crossmember with the engines weight secured from the top, but you risk the weight of the engine bending the perches down, breaking or bending them along with linkage and the transmission mount. I wouldn't try it without the engine removed.

Just hook up the hoist to hold it in place- not sure it's easier than just pulling it, though, as the 'cherry picker' legs will be in your way when you try to drop the crossmember. Trying to do it without some sort of support holding the engine would be potentially catastrophic...

Yes, you can! I did it with mine ( small block) I put a strap in the front of the motor and put a floor jack under the pan w/a block of wood to distribut the weight. See the picks
