I don't really know much about where this truck came from or any history but the paperwork I have for it says "abandoned", so I really know nothing about how long it's been sitting for or why it's not running. It was at a towing yard that needed to get it off their lot. I've been looking for a 60-66 Chevy/ GMC for quite some time 'till I came across an ad on Craigslist for this truck for $1000. It is mostly complete other than 2 spark plug wires, air cleaner, battery, and oil dipstick. Went to check it out the next day. We hooked up some jumper cables to see if it turned over and it turns over fine but sounds like it may need a starter motor too. It seemed like a good deal but I was able to haggle him down a bit and ended up paying $850. I don't know how great of a deal I got but hope it works out good. If anyone would like to give me advice on where to start It would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that it'll start, stop and steer properly 1st. Get it mechanically sound before making it pretty and you wont have any issues. What are you plans for it? Drive and restore or just drive?

I plan on restoring I but I also want to use to go off road and go camping with it. I want to go with the stock look while still having good performance in the snow and mud and whatnot. I want to go with steel wheels but I don't know what size to go with. I already got the spark plug wires. I need to get anther carb rebuild kit since I ordered the wrong one. What size air cleaner should I go with, I would like to go with k&n.?

I believe your option for stock steelies will probably be 15" or 16"

What size are the stock wheel and tire setup? I was thinking about going 33 x 10 x 16. Not too wide or tall but kinda in between. I don't really know much about tire sizes or especially metric but I want to find a good size wheel for offroading without going too big or small. I seem to like around 33" tire sizes and 16" rims are easy to find tires for

It has the 305 V6 and 4 speed transmission. Hoping everything is all good inside the engine. Never heard it run but it turned over but seems like it needs a new starter. Any ideas on where to get one of those?

Have you tried your local auto parts? You may have to go to one such as NAPA.

Welcome to the forum. Very nice looking truck at a bargain price. My first priority would be to check with the local DMV and make sure you can get it titled and registered.

Thanks! I'm going to try and register and insure it next week. Hope all goes well and inexpensive. I will try star auto parts for the starter. My brother is the one of the supervisors for the warehouse over there and he can get me any parts for retail value.

The tires that would look close to stock but taller would be 255- 85R-16. There about 33 tall and 10 wide. Remember those big 35 12.50’s look cool but make driving and parking a real pain. Just my 2 cents and speaking from past experiences.

Rockauto.com usually does pretty well with V6 parts. What makes you think the starter is bad?

Yeah I was thinking 255/85 R16 what size wheel would work best with those? 16 x 8 or 16 x 7?
When we hooked jumper cables up to it to see if it turned over it seemed like the starter had trouble turning over. The guy at the tow yard said it sounded like I may need a new starter too. Rockauto orders most of their parts from Metro Automotive which is also the warehouse/ distributor for Star Auto parts. Anything Rockauto has I can get for retail value through my brother

Just a heads up on the starter, I had the same problem with my 62 GMC. There are no starters out there for this motor(305 V6). Luckily Autozone can find you a rebuild kit with all the parts needed to get the original starter back in ship shape. It took me a couple of hours to rebuild my starter, but I cleaned it up really nice, you could probably get the starter functioning with the parts in 20 minutes or so. Here is my truck (not 4x4).

Thanks! Regarding your tire size inquiry, I have the original 15" steel wheels with 31x10.50's and it is lowered 4", with no rubbing at all. You should be able to fit 33's easily on your taller truck.

I recently ordered a carb rebuild kit from carburetor-parts.com but I was the wrong one for my carb. The plunger for the accelerator pump was the hook style but my carb it the C-clip style. I can't really tell the model # since its worn off but it's stromberg WW #23-**0 I think. Also I need to get an air cleaner kit. I would like to go with K&N since it's easy to clean and cheaper in the long run but I don't know what kit to order. That's all I'm waiting on to get my truck running other than fuses and battery.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

Go to THE 6066 GMC GUY. You will get a lot of info over there on these GMC trucks along with the great people here.I think I still have the starter out of my truck if you are interested, I put a 350 in mine.I think that some are putting a holly carb on and getting better performance and mileage.

the wider the tire the tougher that it is on the frame around the steering box

I never used it as the motor had a bad knock in it so I got rid of it and put in the 350.The previous owner said it stated good though. I think I still have it in a shed but been sitting there for about 5 years now. PM me a way to get in touch and maybe I can deliver it down there somewhere. I go through there taking cattle to az. and the imperial valley.

Are the dip sticks the same length for all the models of the 305 v6? I need a new dipstick for my truck and there is one on ebay. Will this work?
