Can you help identify these?

I am installing a sway bar because I want much more control and while I was taking one off of a 78 Chevy truck in the junkyard I saw these two support arms (don't know the name) leading from the skid plate in the center up to each side of the frame.

What I would like to know is if these add even more rigidity or support like sway bars do. I went ahead and removed them just in case. (Sorry for the poor pics.)

I also got two hood hinges and springs in great shape for 6 bucks so not too bad of a day.
