Re: State Smog Laws
Utah(In the counties with smog programs) is 67 or older for no smog. Basically from the advent of PCV forward you get smogged. There are some rural areas that don't have testing, but I'm sure it will ultimately come statewide.

Re: State Smog Laws
In GA there are a few counties that are highly populated, basically just the metro atlanta area, in which emissions testing is required on vehicles that are less than 25 years old - outside those counties there is no testing. Also, anything older than the 25-yr cutoff, which is a rolling number allowed to increase each year, doesn't require testing even if it is registered in those metro areas.

Re: State Smog Laws
Las Vegas (Clark County actually) is exempt for 67 and older but other more rural counties are smog exempt last I checked... and I agree with above that it's just wrong that we have worse rules than Komifornia ....

Re: State Smog Laws
California is not bad at all...just buy a '75 or older vehicle and you have no worries.

Re: State Smog Laws
Born and raised in Ohio, now living in Arizona.
In Ohio, they tested only in certain counties that basically surrounded the larger metropolitan areas like Cincinnati, Columbus, etc... I purposely moved just outside those counties when I lived near Cincinnati so I wouldn't have to be tested, so I've never actually went through the process my entire life but I'm vary familiar with how it works in each state. In Ohio they only go back 25 years and that's a rolling year elimination program. So every year a new year is eliminated. As of right now they go back to 1987. If you have something newer than that and you can show it's somewhat of a collector and seldom driven, you can purchase collector car plates that will exempt you from the test, and generally you carry collector car insurance as well. If your car is older than 25 years, it doesn't get tested at all, and you are also eligable for a one time fee historical license plate, never need to buy renewal tags again. Pretty cool. Many other states have also adapted the rolling 25 year exemption E-testing program, and there is rumor California is wanting to do the same, keep your fingers crossed if you live there, I have family that does. Arizona,,,this is a state that needs to catch up with the times. They still go back to 1967 here which is a complete joke. Again I purposely moved into a county that doesn't test. Only Maricopa and Pima counties have the emissions testing, and that's basically Phoenix and Tuscon. Up here in my county there is nothing. However there is no rolling year elimination here, they test to 1967. You can however purchase collector car insurance here if your car is in fact collectable, and it will exempt you from any testing here. Doesn't matter if you have collector car tags or not,,,,,just show proof of collector car insurance for that vehicle. On newer OBDII cars, they don't do a sniffer here, just plug into the OBD port, check for codes and send you on your way. Anything before OBDII (1996) gets a sniffer test all the way back to 1967,,,pfffff. Now that California has finally decided to expempt pre 1975 cars, and is thinking about the rolling year elimination program, Arizona needs to wake up and do the same. There is no need to test cars before cat converters anyway and California finally realized that (hence the 1975 cutoff in California). Once the remaining states realize that 25 year old cars are very seldom driven and amount to a very very small percentage of any so called pollution, they'll see it makes more sense to implement the rolling year cutoff program. Until then I'll remain up here in Prescott. |

Re: State Smog Laws
I'm glad at times I live in Iowa, this subject is one of those times. We don't have smog or inspections here. The time could come though when it could happen.

Re: State Smog Laws
i think CA change there year to 84 or older is exempt ,or there thinking about changing it
Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is: • Hybrid • Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older • Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs • Electric • Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs. • Motorcycle • Trailer
