Look at what I found at the yard today!

Went to a local salvage yard today (out at college), and grabbed this off an 87 3/4 ton 2wd GMC. Only paid $20 for it! It even has all 4 brackets in good shape too. Now I just have to find out the diameter so I can get new bushings for it. Anybody have a guess?

Sweet deal!

Just measure the cross section of the bar with a ruler....it is proably 1-1/8" if it is off a 3/4 ton.

Adjust a crescent wrench to fit it real snug, then remove the wrench and measure it with a ruler.

I'm betting it's a 1 1/4. If so see my FAQ swaybar page for bushing part number.

You can use a fitted wrench to find size.If a 1 1/4 fits over it but a 1 1/8 doesn't figure it's a 1 1/4.

72c10step,
Did you get the 2 brackets off the frame? They are riveted on and a pain to get off when you are out in a wrecking yard.

No I didn't, I didn't have the proper tools to get them off. I was told you can get brand new ones at any GM dealer, and I've seen them on Early Classic Enterprises site too if I remember correctly.

They are both the same part #? Thanks for the info TX Firefighter, I've been following your thread in the FAQ section of your install. Very well done!

Finally got a chance to measure the sway bar today with my friend's tools. I used TX Firefighter's method of putting the crescent wrench around the bar and measuring the opening. The wrench only went 1 1/8" wide, and didn't fit over the bar, so it must be a 1 1/4" bar. Thanks everyone for the ideas! Check out my new post (part 2) to see the stuff I found today!
