carb and trans questions
just got a used 305 to hold me over while I build my big block, the 305 has cast iron 4 barrel intake, my question is can I run my holley street avenger 650 double pumper on this stock engine? I am going to use headers as well but other than that its pretty much stock.
Also my TH 400 has a 3000 stall converter, with the weaker little 305 will the stall make the truck nothing more than a big turd? should I flip for a factory spec converter? PLan on mating the engine and trans this weekend and getting it in the truck. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: carb and trans questions
Sure you can run the 650DP, just remember to be sensible with the loud pedal, lest you bog.
While you could run the stall converter, I would take it back to stock. Stall converters behind small stock engines are a major cause of Turrets.

Re: carb and trans questions
Do you have an adaptor to put that holley on there?

Re: carb and trans questions
wasn't sure if I needed one, I was more concerned that the holley would be to much for the 305.

Re: carb and trans questions
You'll need an adaptor and while a bit of overkill the holley will get you by till you build the bigblock. I ran an 800 double pumper once in a similiar situation.
Here's the recomended adaptor. Look on ebay too. Some cheaper ones there. Amazon.com: Edelbrock 2696 Four-Hole Square-Bore... |

Re: carb and trans questions
glad I can use the carb, would I still need an adaptor if I switch to an edelbrock intake if I can find one for the cheap I might ditch the stock 1, its kinda gunked with oil and what not.
I am planning on at least making the engine pretty since I have it out of the truck. While it may be 150 or so horses, at least maybe I can enjoy decent gas milage and get the truck on the road. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: carb and trans questions
If you get the right intake you won't need an adaptor. An edelbrock performer rpm will work. You'll need a square bore intake.
Here's one on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-PERFORME...efa0d3&vxp=mtr Last edited by geezer#99; 11-27-2012 at 01:18 PM. |

Re: carb and trans questions
I believe that most edelbrock intakes have a holley style flange. Correct me if I am wrong. I think the 650 double pumper would be OK if you stay out of the double pump part of it. In case you dont know, they are called double pumpers because they have two accelerator pumps. Because they are a progressive style thottle, they do not squirt fuel at the same time.
I think you can get a reman stock converter for under 50.00 at most transmission shops. Good Luck |

Re: carb and trans questions
cool thanks for the info i was quoted 80 for a stock converter and 40 for the core charge. SInce I have more time than money perhaps I will give the 3000 a try and see how it goes.
