New Member, New Project, 66 c10

Yea, I get to tell you all about my POS rust bucket, Looking for a name to call my build some thing that says " I am cheap, I make mistakes, This might be the first chevy I have ever owned...... I normally work on hondas only" Feel free to make suggestions for my build name.


So far I have a rusted out 1966 C10 that I paid 1000.00 for, a 1987 suburban that made it 100 miles from the owners house to where it will soon be sacrificed to the c10 for 850.00 and I paid 200.00 for plates, I bought an economy heater? the one that mounts under the dash only from a 63 for 35.00, and I paid about another 50.00 for some front end parts that I can not even remember what I bought.

Here is the best part, I have not even gotten the 66 c10 to my house yet, the old owner said he would bring it into town for me for nothing but I would have to wait a week so I figure I will save my AAA tows for a later date.

For now I will continue to read up on others builds but being from Colorado I really felt that throttle body injection was the way to go. I know lots of ugly wires but not a lot of information on hiding the harness. Maybe I can do a write up on what I do.

BTW do you put you photos on photo bucket and just link them?

Need a want to buy section in the classifieds the guy I bought my 66 from has about 20 others for sale but the only other short bed I seen out there was a 61 and I think the dash is ugly on those. He also parts some out. Has some rare ones out there. Let me know if there is one truck every one is looking for and I can ask him.

Going to try to upload a photo, if it works the truck is still in the field I found it in, I tossed in a picture of the 87 2wd suburban just for kicks. Poor suburban it runs and drives so nice, only to be cut up for parts... going to cut the the roof off of it for patch panels

It was funny buying it, the old owner was sad to see it go but he told me to take good care of it. I did not have the heart to tell him it was about to die. I hope to make a few bucks back from crush, and parts I can sell off it.

I do know it will not power brake but if you go through a big dip in the road just right you can get the rear to bounce up and the tires will chirp. Noting like having a bit of fun with a beater.

Hoping the weight reduction of the 66 will make it a bit more fun.

No updates, waiting on the truck ..... oh the wait.... ugh. Called him today and was told some time next week, If I get too anxious I can use a aaa tow but I feel they might be better used for test drives.

Looks like you have a good truck to build and a good donor also. Yes, I would just transplant the TBI 350 and OD trans from the Burb to your truck. If need be, you can buy a standalone TBI harness for fairly reasonable. But then again, with some research and some time, you can utilize the factory harness.

I am supposed to receive my c10 this week end. HA Brake booster from a 95 s10 and the brackets for the power steering and brake booster ordered yesterday. I checked the mail this morning and they have not arrived yet, Not sure how long they take to make and ship but I now know more than 8 hours.

Great find! Looks almost exactly like the 66 I picked up for my father back in 88.
My nephew inherited the truck in 03 & made into a short bed. I can't tell by the photos but is it a long or short bed?

It is a short bed but it is not in the greatest condition, might have to chop up a few long beds to make mine look right again.

Quick note before bed, I got the truck tonight, Tried to get it started but failed. It was turning over and we got it to hit a few times then it locked up, oh well time to yank it out any how. So far we know the e-brake works ..... not much but it is some thing. More pictures to come.

Well The first step as always tear her apart and see how bad it is,
This is a low buck build like every one else does but it all ways seems like people say they are doing a buget build then some where in the middle they spend 10k on it. I am into this truck for about 2000.00 and I hope to stay there.

Any how, I want to clean up the frame and try to POR it.
I plan to use the complete front suspension/cross member from the donor.
The more I think about it this truck is going to become more suburban than c10 truck
The drive train, rear axle, power steering and column, and any other parts that will put this truck back on the road.


Body will come in time and we have a huge swap meet here in Colorado in February to find some fenders and bed sides.

Ok quick update, I got my new mounting brackets for the power steering and brake booster today from Captainfab. A couple of problems with them though. First off they came in a bit too fast, I am not ready for them and 4 days to get here, I thought there would at least be a bit of a delay for Christmas but I guess the captain works through the holidays to get us our brackets. Second of all he packed them in a vacuum sealed bags that might be indestructible, I will have to break out some serious tools to get them out of the bags Lastly it is 8 degrees out side right now so I stopped at sears on my way home and got a set of coveralls "30.00" and I will try to get some thing done tomorrow. Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your project. I too have sacrificed nice running cars as donors. It's a good way to save money and obtain known good, matching parts.

Be sure to take a lot of before pictures. It avoids disappointment later when you realize all you have are progress and finished pictures, but almost nothing showing what you started out with.

Well I got the fenders off today, and the front grill, I did not take pictures just know I now hate the one 1/2 in. bolt at the very front of the fender, Got up to 25 today, Balmy should have worn shorts and a t-shirt. Makes me laugh when you have to chisel ice to find bolts.
I do have a place to work on it inside but if you find Jimmy1614's posts he is doing the exact same thing, well close he got an 89 suburban but he bought a 66 swb as well and both doing our projects at the same time. But he is going to try to do a 5 lug conversion on his rear axle and we had to angle his truck in the garage to make room to pull it apart.

If all goes well I will be in the garage this week end and have heat.

I had a few to work on the truck today despite the cold .... I got the nose off and it looks like it had power steering but I have never seen any thing like it, let me know if you think it is factory and if I should try to sell it.

BTW yes that is snow and Jimmy1614 hurry up it was a pain in the ass to work those rusty old bolts out with no heat.

Fenders are beyond repair, Core support looks fixable. I really have my work cut out for me.

Yes that power steering is factory. I would ask at least a 100 bucks for the setup with the brackets, maybe even 150.
