Steering wheel is lose

How the heck do I get to the nut that tightens my steering wheel - I don't want to break my horn button - Do I just pull it off?

use the nut behind the wheel first to give the info that is required. what steering wheel is it std or deluxe. it is not the nut that is loose. it will be the upper bearings that have dissipated.
I think that Aerotruck has posted several times an expanded view of a steering column

the round horn buttons just push on with a rubber ring holding them in place...just carefully pry it off.

He did not say the nut was loose, he just wants to know how to get to it.

understanding the difficulties of the english language. didn;t he ask how to get to the nut that tightens the steering wheel.. if it wasn't loose then he would have asked how to get to the nut that hold the steering wheel

The vast majority of members here are respectful of others, even when they seem to have very limited knowlege of these trucks.

There is at least one member who is sometimes rude, arrogant, condecending, and insulting. (aka: trolling)

I have noticed this pattern, and others have as well. They have told me so.

This troll apparently does not recognize this in himself.

I am sure some of the confusing here is related to my explanation of the problem - I have a standard 1964 chevy C-10 - When I hold the steering wheel is exhibits some minor play up and down and side to side - I would like to know how to tighten the steering wheel and eliminate the play.

at the top of the column under the str whee is where the bearing is. it is just like a set of old bicycle wheel brgs, just ball brgs set in a race. they wear out and fall down the column which creates the sideways slop in your steering wheel. your horn cap is as illustrated above. the other style has 2 screws from the back. it will make it easier if you have a steering wheel puller to take it off. if you are also having a problem with your turn signal mechanism now is the time to repair. the ball bearings are getting more difficult to find but I think one or 3 outlets like lmc may have them. someone a while back mentioned another source; can't remember but try search. try steering column, strg whl or strg whl bearings and you may find it

I have put new bearings in mine, and still have this problem. There is something else going on in there. Just havent figured it out yet.

the outer race can also be worn along with the inner surface, which if I can remember correctly is just steering shaft itself. it can have a groove worn in it. it doesn't take much to make it feel sloppy. there are a couple of ways to remedy as replacement parts are difficult to find and the outer race may be the problem. find a strg column with little or no slop in it. you can have the strg shaft wear built back up and machined. or one could try and find a supplier of loose ball bearings(they make them all sizes) that have them a few thou larger. you may find them in a bicycle shop but they are more than likely getting out dated there also.
