drain for cowl vent
I have had to let my 56 short step set outside in the winter weather does any one know where the drains for the cowl are in the bottom of the truck.

Like orge said, there is a flap with a screw. Unscrew it, bend it back and rod out all the junk that is keeping it from draining. Major reason the bottom hinge pockets rust out.

why in the world would they put flaps over it to begin with? Maybe to prevent small critters? Why not a grate or a vent of some sort...
I need to remove my flaps when I get home tonight... |

It took me a moment to find mine hiding at the back of the wheel well.
One flap is sorta rusty...that can't be good. :-( |

I got all the stuff out of both sides do I need to bend something and put it in there and try to drag what's left from the area below the upper cowl.

I think the flaps were there to prevent the wheels from throwing mud into the drain opening. Remember, most of these trucks were used on farms and dirt roads. My flaps had a crease pressed into them that was shaped to let water drain to the side but protect the openings from the front. I have cleaned mine as good as possible with compressed air and then water. I have considered pouring some Rustoleum into the cowl vent to see if I could seal up the inside of that area, but haven't tried that yet.

Those are the first things I rip off every 55-59 I get. Every one I have ever bought was full of dirt and leaves
