69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
Maybe I just need a class on how to thoroughly search the forum for what I am looking for. Normally, I won't ask until I have exhausted at least three days looking. Ha-Ha.
I am working on my steering, steering column and wheel. I have found most of what I needed to know from everyone's wealth of knowledge. However, I can't seem to find information on the 69-70 shift pointer. I found the part for the pointer and for the fiber cable at ClassicParts. I know where the fiber cable attaches to the bracket on the light bulb. What I am trying to find out is: a. How does the fiber cable snap into the pointer? Should there be some kind of rectangular lens in the pointer? How does the pointer attach to the column? Does it simply snap in? b. Where can I buy a replacement shift indicator? (plastic lens part) I can only find the one for 71-72 on line. I need the one with L1 and L2. |

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
Does the insert that the fiber cable hooks to from 71-72 model also fit the pointer for the 67-70 model? I have looked at Brothers, Truck Shop, Classic Parts and LMC and can't find a solid answer.
Also, still wondering about shift indicator (insert not housing) with L2 and L1? |

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
I will try to give them a call. Their website is void of any 67-70 model year pointers and indicators. It's a mystery....kinda like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. The world will never know.

WES knows these trucks...if he doesn't have the parts he will send you in the direction to locate one (I hope). By the way ask him about the Hot Dog

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
OK....so I found the 67-70 pointer housing on various websites. I have also found the fiber optic wire. I am still looking for the rectangular lens piece that the fiber optic wire plugs into inside the pointer. Also, I am looking for the indicator lens. Are these pieces not produced? Is this something I am going to have to go to a donor vehicle to find? Someone has to of climbed this mountain before me. |

Here is a web site that lists them for cars. They might be the same, looks like it. http://www.shiftworks.com/lens.htm I would presume the measurements are the same for the two listed there. Be sure and post back in this thread if you get one and it works OK. LockDoc

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
I got my fiber optic, pointer, pointer lens and indicator from a 75 van at the wrecking yard. They are identical to the truck

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
The van's are identical to the 71-71 pick ups but not the 67-70. The shift indicator from the 67-68 Camaro is the closest I can find. The lens from the Camaro is 1/4" wider than that of the 67-70 C10 but the curve looks close. I think i can grind the edges a little and it will slide right in the truck housing.
I called around this morning. Apearantly, no one ever made a reproduction indicator lens for 67-70 and the pointer housing has been discontinued. I see modifications in my future. |

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
LMC has the pointer housing in stock. eBay has them too for about the same price after shipping. They say they have the Fibre Optic but no pointer.... I have ordered one and I'll figure something out for the pointer.....

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
My boss is telling me to get back to work and stop researching shift indicators. Ha-Ha-
I think I am going to order both pointers (parts #7 & #8 from LMC). I think that if push comes to shove I can modify and make the parts work. Even if I have to take the illuminating part out of part #8 and put it in part #7. Or even trim and make part #7 work on my column. As for the indicator dial....I am having my housing re-chromed and am going to order the indicator lens from a 1967 Nova. I will post a photo once parts come in and I get it put together. |

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
I know this is kind of an old thread, but did anyone ever find the 67-70 fiber optic indicator piece? Or figure out a solution?

I would like to resurrect this thread because I am in search for the same rectangular piece that the fiber optic wire plugs into.

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
It's not just a rectangle, it is L-shaped. Here is a pic of the NOS fiber optic cable assembly I bought off eBay. The part number is 6291357.

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
Does anyone know if the 71-72 pointer/housing (non-tilt) will work on the 67-70 columns? LMC lists a different part number for the fiber optic cable for the 71-72, so I suppose I would need that one to go with it. Would the bulb holder be the same? The PO had removed all four of these parts, so starting from scratch.

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
Keeping this old thread alive..... Did anyone ever find a source for the pointer insert for a 69-70 non tilt? It is easy to find the fiber optic cable and the 1969-70 Column Shift Pointer Housing-w/o Tilt. Strange that no one reproduces this small part.

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
Well after having 2 1970s I thot I would dig through some old boxes of parts and found 2 pointers for 69 to 70 c10s. So I bought the pointer housing and tried to install the pointer lens only to find the housing is made incorrectly. I'll have to use a dremel to try to carve out the housing to the right shape so that the lens will be flush.

Re: 69 - 70 Pointer and Shift Indicator
I have an original nontilt column. The Ididit would not work. I also have the chrome shift indicator. This weekend I'm gonna look at it closer and try to figure get it to fit. Right now I'm using a 71-72 shift indicator and pointer that works but doesn't look right. I am wondering if a 3D printer could print some of this stuff up and maybe fit and inish be better.

Ididt just got back to me and confirmed it wouldn't fit. I have a billet housing a friend gave me and it must be for the Ididt column cause it doesn't look anything like my 71 tilt I bought from Randy500. I took the indicator housing off and tried to fit it with the lens but it wouldn't work. As you stated earlier it may work with some filing & sanding. I may order one and see. Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out.
